'SERVICE ENGINE SOON' at 26632ml - WHY???

Hi all.

For some reason today when I was getting back home from friends, in the middle of the trip I got 'Service Engine Soon' light on. The rest of the trip (about 45 miles) I drove as usuall without any problems, but with the light on.
I have 26632miles on my 2K SE auto. Why do I have this light on? what exactly does this means? Any ideas?

Thanks.

If you don't have any mods under your engine hood then take it back to a dealer. If you do, put everything back to stock.. Intake.. etc.. then take it back..

Check your gas cap. If the cap is not tightly screwed in, the car will give your a check engine warning for emission reasons.

You could try unplugging your battery overnight...

Hey Tes,

My went off around the same mileage a while ago. If I remember properly they needed to download some new code into the ECU. Since then I haven't had a problem.

Sorry I don't remember excactly what is was, but it wasn't a big deal.

I had this problem like 10 months ago when i had about 12k on the car. I drove and the light just turned on. Took it to the dealer and they had to replace the Catalyic Converter, don't know how it happened but how can a cat converter go out in like 3 months. Just go to the dealer and they'll fix it

Thanks, I checked - It's fine.

Just got called back from the dealership - they "fixed" it. They say it was "software glitch" and by uploading new software to the ECU they fixed it.
Because the car is still under warranty it didn't cost anything. But I think if this kind of problem happens to anyone - it should be fixed for free no matter if the car still under warranty or not.
Anyway - going to pickup the car now.

Thanks everyone for your response.

Crap fuel, lead, and/or some fuel additives can kill them in no time.

Just had the same thing happen. Only have 15k miles on my Max and the dealer took it in no problem and reprogrammed the computer. JWT Charger not a problem. Nobody said anything. 3 hour wait sucked though. Light is off and no problems since.

This happened to me recently at 25,500. They told me the same thing, that the ECU had to be reprogrammed. I had had the ECU TSB completed a few months before but don't know if this had anything to do with it. Everything is fine now!
