New sound, related sound? What is it?

I was getting a light scraping sound at the right front wheel whenever turning, even slightly, to the left. Went away when turning right. Unaffected by braking or acceleration. Nearly disappeared when going over 65mph. Almost sounded as if a thin metal shield/plate was scraping against another piece of metal. Sound would be present for a couple weeks, then go away for a couple weeks. Brought it to a shop, they said whoever did the brakes last had the caliper line twisted and the brake pad clips(?) on backwards.

So they reinstalled what was backwards, the sound was gone for a day, then returned for about 5 minutes, and now seems to be gone again. WTF is going on? If there is something physically wrong with a part, how can this be coming and going every couple months?

Also, there is a pulsating hum that gets more noticeable with increased speed. Best way I can describe it is the way a washing machine sounds during the spin cycle. Again, seems to be coming from right front wheel area. Not affected by turning, braking, or acceleration, but does seem speed dependent. Still present even when coasting in neutral. Any ideas?

Obviously I need to get a better idea for myself what this is since the garage isn't taking care of it. My only other option is to bring it to the stealership and praying for the best.

With those symptoms I'd check that your right axle nut is tight and verify the wheel bearing with car in gear and wheels turning (low gear at idle just to get the wheels turning) on a lift with a mechanic's stethoscope. Good hunting.

I concur, doctor. What is with that axle nut? It can make funny, intermittent noises with the wheel bearing.

Wheel bearing sounds like it's toasted either way.

here's something to check:

I had the same thing happen to me -- from the Front Passenger wheel.
Turns out the little metal shim on the back of one of the brake pads had come unglued from the pad and rotated itself so it was rubbing against the part of the rotor that surrounds the hub. It had ground down fairly well and got itself comfortable in there where it only rubbed ever so gently (enough to make noise) when making a right turn and the car leaned.

something tells me if your brake line was twisted you'd have either some pulling or sticking brakes.
