Suspension question

Posted this in the I30 section already thought Id get some info from the Maxima guys as well.

just purchased an 01 I30t that needs some suspension works. The rear end creaks when going over bumps and kinda bounces around. The front end has the clunk that ive read about from searching.

My plan was to replace all 4 struts and springs and all associated hardware.

Should I do anything else?

It has had most maintenance done but the previous owner stopped at the suspension which is the last piece of the puzzle. Steers perfectly. alignment is perfect. drives great, tight steering, confident at highway speeds, just when going over bumps, rear end creaks. Front end clunks.

Ive checked the hood and it seems to be fine, nothing rattling there from what I can tell.

So any ideas what the creak may be from going over the bumps in the rear? Just bad struts, mounts, springs? etc?

And the clunk in right front, anything there I should consider beside the struts?

By your join date, you're not, but by your post count, you are.

Good luck with getting the answers you're looking for. Hopefully you can get your problem fix without it costing you too much.

I was giving you a hard time as well.

As far as your rear suspension creaking, try spraying some lube on the moving parts. Bushings get old and try out over time, and eventually crack and become brittle and can't do their jobs effectively anymore.

If your front end clunks, how bad is it? My front end was making a bit of a clunking sound and come to find out it was related to my lower radiator support being rusted out and the lower crossmember had broken free from it, causing the clunking. Wouldn't hurt to check that. Poke it with a large screwdriver or something similar, especially around the areas where the lower crossmember bolts to it. That's where it tends to rust. Also, they rust from the inside, out. If you see bubbles in the paint it's probably rusted from the inside. Once they start to rust, the corrosion works quickly. I don't know if where you live (in your state) if they used road salts during winter time or not, but that's a main cause of it. The original owner of my car bought it here and it stayed here most of the time, but he did move to NY for a few years before moving back and selling the car, which I bought. Just for those few years it was enough to rot my support.

Im from Oklahoma and we dont have much problems with that. I have checked the underneath and its completely rust free and everything is solid. I will investigate the radiator support tomorrow. I am suspecting it is a strut mount or something in that. It doesnt make any clicking noises and I know the cv joints are good. Ball joints are good. Struts are worn out so I am suspecting that. I am the second owner and the first owner did a ton of maintenance but stopped at the struts/springs and a few other front end parts. It drives straight as can be and has tight steering but bounces around and creaks in the rear end and clunks in the front.

didnt i read that the rear trailing arms are liquid filled and tend to crack and leak with age? if thats the case, that could make a creaking sound

Right front clunk is almost guaranteed to be your passenger motor mount.

Make sure you read my thread for suggestions on WHICH replacement parts to get.
