Retrofitting 2001 Steering Wheel on 2000?

The reason I'm even considering this is because the 2000 steering wheels only have the ugly plastic NISSAN logo and a lack of steering wheel audio controls. Plus, the guy who owned the car before me wrote all over the air bag with a pen, and the ink STILL won't come out, even with alcohol. The 2001 ones have audio controls and a stately chrome logo. I've heard the 5.5gen ones are slightly larger and won't work, but I'm not sure how true that is. Nissan wants around $800 or so for the new wheel and audio controls, so I'm probably going to the local junkyard to look for one. If I am able to get the parts, I'll do a write-up with pics.

So I'm wondering, has anyone here tried this with any success? I've searched the .org and nothing for the 5th gens, but I did see someone put an 01 wheel on a 4th gen.

In my honest opinion, I don't think it will be worth the time and trouble just for a simple steering wheel. Ask yourself, Are the audio controls really that important to have at the palm of your hand? If so, then go for it otherwise, Just replace it with the OEM 00' Steering Wheel. Your car, your time, your money. Just giving my .02c

It sure looks like monumental task but I think it would be rewarding. My aftermarket HU doesn't have a physical volume dial, and constantly reaching over while driving is annoying and hazardous. I didn't mind that when I had the OEM stereo, but that was the biggest drawback when I put the new one in. Having a chrome logo is a plus.

Plus, I'm sure it will probably end up being only a few hours and less than $200 or so... assuming nothing goes wrong.

I think this falls under the same category as Tuner's retrofit grill thread. It's worth the effort for the uniqueness of it, even if you are the only person who notices. You'll be the only guy (that I know of) with a 01 steering wheel in a 00. Not a huge deal, but I'd do it if I was in your shoes.

keep us updated on your progress with this, I just dont like the look of the 00 steering wheel, 01 looks a lot better IMO. In the mean time I did put a chrome nissan logo on my wheel I took off an 02 altima, and I like it.

btw I dont think the 01 steering wheel has the chrome logo either, that didn't begin until 2002

Darn, you're right ... Perhaps I could use the airbag module for a 5.5? Might as well get one of those new OEM for safety.

Anyways, I found that fourm from the 4th gen guy who did this. Here (post 28)
