bouncing rpm needle

Hello, I have a 2003 automatic with 126000 miles, lacking power and also, is it normal for the engine rpms to bounce when over 7500 while in neutral?

No it is not normal ... you said lack of power I might suggest that the MAF sensor is failing.

Just wondering... Why are you revving to 7.5k?

If his car is an auto trans, he's hitting the rpm limiter.

Which would explain the bouncing in neutral.

To the OP - if you're in Neutral you have NO reason to go over 3K rpm. Why are you flooring it in that situation?

Please explain your situation more clearly so we can better help you.

-1 (On the sounding cool part)

Rev limiter is there to protect your engine. It is not an S2000 or a Motorcycle. You have no reason to be getting past 3K while revving if you're in neutral. It is not healthy for your motor. Heck, in DRIVE, I don't even go over 2,300 RPM. Give your car the love it deserves

^Hahaha, I guess you're right, although the Fast & Furious crowd and the young bucks may disagree. I thought the OP might be from one of those mindsets. It def. sounds good from a sport bike with the right pipe. On a Maxima it just sounds...unnecessary...

My car before the Max (97 GrandAm) had a rev limiter at 4K in neutral and Park. I may have discovered that unintentionally once, but intentionally a few more tiems after that

I know, stupid question but thought I would see if anybody has a hookup. Do you think the salvage yard would be a safe bet for one?

Try the first, if it doesn't work...the latter.

Ok, did the clean and idle relearn. Max is strong like bull. I had seen the maf clean post but never went to it. Turns out, sombody experienced the exact problem after installing a new k&n filter. Well I had put in a new k&n filter myself. Who would of thought a new filter would cause problems? Anyways, problem solved!! Thanks for the post which directed me backward in the right direction

Yes indeed. I retain a stock paper filter and went a little ghetto for some sound by drilling out 4 1" holes in the top of the housing in front of the filter. Sounds like an intake with no ill side effects. No power gain/loss, but it sounds better under WOT.

Get one of those MAF adapters from ebay and use a cone filter. I have an auto and I get the wobbly RPM needle as well. Can't make any sense of that and trans shops when I ask just act clueless.

Powerloss can be caused by a failing MAF but you could also have clogged pre-cats or the main cat. Hit them with a hammer to check for a rattling sound. Or remove and inspect.

This held me back from getting a drop in K&N air filter. Is there any non-oiled K&N or AEM's? I have a $10 eBay filter in my car right now and so far, it has been clean for the past.... I don't even remember when the last time I changed it was What drop in filters (Non Oiled) do you guys recommend? (I do have GAB)
