Is it worth anything?
Is it worth anything?
I have a 2002 GLE with 259K miles on it. I admit we did not take the best care of it and needs a ton of work (alternator belt, timing belt, new fuel tank, brakes, power steering leak for starters) about $4000 worth.
I tried getting an estimate from an online calculator but it wouldn't give me an estimate for anything over 200K miles.
I'm seeing prices on similar maximas age wise and just over 175K going for $2400. I am thinking it's not worth anything based on what it needs and I'm looking to the forum to let me know if I am on the right track or not.

time for new ride i say the car sale for parts 500 at most
I was in a similar situation. My transmission went out at 211,000 miles and I had a car that either needed $2200 for a rebuilt transmission or I could try to sell a 211k mile car with no transmission for what, $500-$1000? I was lucky that i actually had another car to use so I wasn't in a situation where I had to sell this CAR.
I am using the car as something to learn on. Car repair has always fascinated me but I've never wanted to "mess up" a working car by playing with it/fixing it. So I am now using this car which is pretty much valueless to learn on. I might be going slower than a turtle, but I am having a blast while learning.
As to the value of the car, if it runs right now I'd say that it is probably worth $750-$1000, but it might take a while to find someone to actually buy it because you will almost have to sell it to someone who can fix it themselves. Hey, speaking of that, I'll give you $300 for it if you're in SC. Haha.
Whatever you decide, have fun!

Good responses above.
My response is not to focus as much on the difference in cost of repairs and value of the car - assuming it is paid off.
Look at what you are saving on a monthly basis on car payments and fix the things that are inexpensive and need to be fixed. Then save your money for another year. The car won't go down in value.
Although you say 4k in repairs, what you listed shouldn't be 4k.
You said "timing belt" - I'm assuming you mean the power steering belt since our cars have timing chains which rarely need replaced. That and what you call the alternator belt don't cost much to replace.
Fuel tank - just curious, why would you need a new fuel tank. Don't know that I've ever heard a problem about fuel tanks. I would check that out.
Power steering leak - probably simply a hose. Another easy fix.
Brakes are just a maintenance item. All cars need them done regularly.
My point is, consider fixing the easy and less expensive items, and just continue to drive the car. If you buy an older car, it will come with maintenance items too.
But sometimes there just comes a time when you are ready for a new car. That may be now!

OP, it's up to you if you want to fix up the car or sell it. Personally, I am not a fan of car payments, and even if I wanted a new or late model car, i'm not in the financial position at this moment for a car payment anyways.
