Anyone else have their sending unit go bad?

A couple months ago, my fuel gauge started being inconsistant. For example, It'd have a little less than half a tank left, and then a couple miles later, it'd be a little above half. After a while, it became perminantely locked on about half a tank. The fuel filter had never been serviced or even touched, so I figured I'd replace it and I would order a new sending unit as well. I pulled out the sending unit yesterday to find that the little metal arm that holds that plastic floaty thing was jammed up. Here's the comparison:

Has anyone else had to do this yet?
