I rebuilt my transmission and changed all the seals. I seriously screwed up the passenger side and it's leaking a lot. I bought another seal and will replace tomorrow.

Question: can I pull the axle and drain the transfer that way? Or bad idea? It's just I will most likely have to drop the cross member to get to the drain plug and forget about the position switch. So is there any reason this is a bad idea? Or can I put a nice clean bucket under the axle and then pull it out?

quite a bit of fluid will come out when you remove the axle, and then more will come out when you remove the seal. you'll likely make a big mess.

I've always preferred draining from the position switch.

 

+1, just drain the transmission, your just going to make a bigger mess otherwise.
