Clutch Repair Advice?

My 5th gen 6-spd has 138k on the original clutch and I recently starting hearing the throwout bearing whining. I figured it would be a good time to replace the entire clutch assembly knowing the labor wouldn't cost much more. What I didn't know is that the flywheel is dual mass and cannot be resurfaced. New flywheels appear to cost $400-$600 depending on source and the overall cost of replacing the entire clutch was quoted at $1,900 by my mechanic...

What would you guys do? Drive it for a while until it totally craps out? Replace the clutch kit, but not the freewheel? Replace it all? Thanks in advance for constructive input.

i've replaced the clutch set without having to resurface/replace the flywheel. if your flywheel is in good condition then you might get away without having to do anything to it. JMO.

Right on. Thanks for the reply. I'm getting conflicting opinions from shops/friends. Some say that the flywheel cannot be resurfaced since it's dual mass...some say it can be. No matter, I know a guy that will do the work for $1,100 without resurfacing/replacing the flywheel (unless needed), which I figure is fair.

I guess my main dilemma is whether or not I continue putting money into the car. It's been taken well care of, and I love the thing, but repairs seem pretty expensive. I'd be stoked to get another 60k miles out of it, but dunno how long she'll last. As with most '02-03 VQ35DE engines, mine burns oil at a pretty fast rate. There's also a mystery rattle at approx. 2k rpm, especially under load. Sounds like nuts and bolts rolling around in a coffee can

Is that 1100 dealer parts plus labor or just labor. It seems a little high especially if it's just labor. I thought average clutch job on the high end would be about six bills.

That's the quote for parts and labor (replacement of entire clutch assembly; clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, pilot bushing).
