2k2 first race - SSEi goes down hard

Man, I'm so hyped right now, I just got to share this with someone.

Ever since I broke in my 2k2 SE 6 spd last week I've been itching to race and I finally got my wish tonight on the way home.

I was on the final stretch of my commute home which is on a 2 lane highway (one lane each way). Its a pretty nice road, with lots of curves but with this really long (3 to 4 km long) straight stretch which is great for passing. Its out in the country and there are no side roads off this stretch, so you don't have to worry about people pulling out in front of you. The only thing you have to watch out for is deer in the fall.

Anyhow, I'm doing my usual 100 km/h (limit is 90) when I come up on two cars; a Toyota Corolla followed by a Pontiac Bonneville SSEi. The SSEi wasn't the latest body style, but the one before it (1998/1999 I think).

The Corolla is doing a whopping 80 km/h and we're still in the twisty section where passing is impossible, so I slow down and follow a safe distance behind the SSEi.

As we round the last curve onto the straight section I can see there are no cars coming the other way, so I drop her down into 3rd and turn my ticker on to indicate that I'm going to pass. A few seconds later, the SSE signals that he's going to pass as well.

We hit the straight section and I let the Bonnie go first and fall in behind, but the guy is taking his sweet time passing so I give it a little more gas and close the gap to the Bonnie.

He speeds up and finally passes and drops back into the right lane. I complete my pass of the Corolla, look down the road to see if there are any cars coming (still none) and decide to pass the SSE as well. Heck, I'm already in the oncoming traffic lane, may as well pass'em all.

Well, Mr. SSE decides this simply won't do and floors it. Race is on! I gun it in third and by redline in third I've caught up to his rear bumper. Shift to fourth, gas down all the way and I'm gaining pretty quickly, I'd estimate at about 5 to 10 km/h. Halfway through fourth and we are side by side. Down the road, I see the lights of on oncoming car, but its pretty far away and I figure I still have time so I keep pressing.

By redline in fourth he's at my rear wheels. I didn't get get a look at the speed because I was watching the tach so closely, but I think redline is 4th is like 180 km/h. Rapid shift to fifth and keep the gas floored and I complete my pass and pull in infront of him with plenty of time to spare. WOOOHOOO! Heart's pumping, palms are sweaty...

He keeps on my *** so I keep going and pulling on him. I got about 5 to 6 car lengths ahead of him and up to 225 km/h before I had to slow down for this Echo which wasn't traveling at stupid-***, brain dead, should be shot by the cops speeds. I was hoping to get a chance to play again once we could pass the Echo, but the SSE ended up turning off onto a side road before I got a chance to pass.

Now I know I'm very bad for what I did and it was very irresponisible and lots of people could of been hurt and I will go to hell for this but MAN what a F@@%!% rush.

Needlesss to say, that was very stupid of you and him. It was stupid of him for not letting you pass, and stupid of you to persist. People have died in accidents like that. What if he had something under the hood that would make his car go faster to yours. You wouldn't be able to pass him. Depending on how stubborn you were, you could have found yourself in a hospital or 6 ft. under.

Cut him some slack, as he said, it was safe. So maybe he would have had to brake and fall in behind the Bonne, big deal. The only thing unsafe was some old man in a Bonne being an @ss when someone was passing. It is very dangerous to adjust your speed drastically by slowing down or speeding up when someone is passing you. It is angry drivers like that that cause accidents.

yep...i agree with 2maxed, its realyl dangoues....if you head collide with someone everyone is dead. what happened happend, but next time you must take control of yourself and keep it cool, on a 3 lane highway be my guest(its awsome) but on a 1 lane highway its just way too risky. Awsome kill after all, that will teach the SSEI how the max is in charge now...hehe

I agree with you for all the reasons you mentioned....BUT sometimes the ancestral beast resurfaces.

At least, it is not like the movie of a Porsche driven pedal to the metal in Stockholm. (I don't believe this was actually done, but it gives wrong indications to some of our "urban very capable" youngsters...)

The guy recognized that it was crazy (225 Km...ahemm..), but it was in a place where the environment appeared to be manageable

I have done it myself once (going to the airport at 5 o'clock in the morning on a highway, nobody in front, to see what the Max was able to do...), so I can't say I'm clean too... but the car is fun...

So Eric, repeat after me: "I will not do it again"

Nice write up (no spelling errors too!). Don't let these guys intimidate you. Be responsible for your actions. As long as you know that you may die doing stuff like this, hey, it's your call.

Enjoyed the story and the way you told it, got my heart pumping too.

Good kill, the guy in the SSEi had nothing coming.

Safe? Well, who am I to lecture you...

You don't get my point...

: I'll try hard but I can't resist.

However, as you said: be responsible for your actions (I agree)... and accept the consequences.

Yeah I am also an aggressive driver and have found that fatalities on the road happen for different reasons (most of the time) I went to a car accident funeral a couple of weeks ago where a man and his three year old son were killed by a driver on a cell phone And who all know about drunk driving fatalities, so cut him some slack he was paying attention to the road and raced at the same time.

I'm not clean on this one either...Usually, though, when I attempt to pass someone, I make sure it is a straight stretch...Quite dangerous on a curvy road (I believe that is what he said)....

Good Kill, just be a safe Killa

Re: Re: 2k2 first race - SSEi goes down hard

Like I said, I know it was stupid and childish and I never would of done this on an unfamiliar road. I only persisted because the road is flat and straight with no side roads, I was gaining on him, and the car that was coming was really far down the road.

If I saw that I wasn't gaining on him or that there wasn't enough time to pass before the other car came, I simply would of pulled in behind him. I'm not so stubborn that I would keep go

BTW, after I pulled in front of the Bonnie it was a good 30 seconds before the oncoming car passed us. This stretch of road is really long. I don't want to give the impression that I pulled in front with barely a second to spare. I might of gone a bit carried away with the suspense...

I'll never do it again...

Some of you people gotta chill out a little bit. The guy said that this is his usual commute home so I'm pretty sure he knows it pretty well. I've calmed down alot myself but on certain roads which I've been driving on for over 7 years I don't hesitate to open her up. Only when it's safe of course. I'm pretty sure if he wasnt gaining and the oncoming car was approaching, he would have backed off.

Nice write up and sweet kill..

holy crap!

Nice kill man!

On a side note, GD ppl. If someone is going to race, they're going to race. People here are old enough to know the consequences and can use their own judgement for when to race and when not to so just let them race. If you don't like it, don't read, and don't reply

sheesh...

Car and Driver tested a 2000 at 7.5/15.8, which is pretty quick for a bigger car. I'm sure it's geared for the highway also.

I would like to point out that the Bonne instigated it and he made it dangerous, thankgod the Max put him in his place.

I'll answer my own question. The SSEi will do 0-60 in 7.5 seconds. That's slow and is not a match for a 2K2 or even a 2K-2K1 5-speed.

300M's are fat and heavy. the 2k2 auto or manual will have no problem handling it.

I've raced with the older 225HP SSEi, that was fun The newer but still the old body style has the series II S/C 3.8 with 240HP. 0-60 times are 7.5 seconds and maybe faster on a really cool night or at lower sea levels. Like all GM cars, they are tall geared which can be good or bad.

Nice kill

As far as the 300M goes, I think they are all automatics and my 6spd pulled ahead by a 2 car lengths in a 80 - 180km test last week. Sad thing was we were both passed by a M5 having some fun with us

Foolish to race against on coming traffic, I've been surprised by NOS addicts before and almost lost it trying to get back in my lane. See ya in hell Eric

They're decently quick (for as heavy as they are). Same engine setup as the GTP-3.8 S/C making 240 HP. But, since it is heavier, I think it does 0-60 in the high sevens..AND if it is like the Grand Prix, they are speed limited ridiculously low-Somewhere around 119 MPH...

it's that new car smell combined with 255hp to the crank causing this 'i-wanna-race-fast-cars' syndrome...give him till that smell goes away..and he'll be ok..

just stay safe and don't think ur invincible..and u'll be ok...
