Question For Anyone Who Removed Factory Stereo in 5.5 Gen Only (Not 5th Gen)
First I have to say that I have searched and watched the video on youtube on how to remove the factory stereo. But I still have 2 questions that I can't seem to find an answer to and I'd like to get an answer before I start this project and potentially break something.
The problem I'm having is the video shows a 5th gen and not a 5.5 gen Maxima & therefore the A/T shifters are different. On the 5th gen, after removing the screw in the coinholder it stated to pry around the shifter. Where exactly do I pry on the 5.5 gen shifter surround? There is the raised silver part that the shifter goes through but then right under that is a black plastic piece. Do I need to get the screwdriver under the black plastic piece?
Also on the 5th gen it looks like once you have it pryed out you can just twist the console top and take it up and over the the shifter. That does not look possible on the 5.5 gen's gated shifter. It looks like I'll need to remove the shift ****. Is that the case? If so how do I accomplish removing the shift know?

You can just unscrew the shift ****. If it's on too tight, you may need a strap wrench to loosen it. The boot should have a snap at the top that will open it enough to get around the reverse interlock.
As far as the trim goes, It's not on very tight at all. If you hook your fingers where the boot connects to the trim and pull straight up. It should come up all as one piece (including the coin holder door and cig lighter). The you tilt the back up until you've cleared your shifter (disconnecting the cig lighter and light for the coin holder) and pull it out.

It turns out the shift **** does not have to be removed. I was prying the wrong part of shift surround. I was trying to pry the silver gated shifter surround instead of the whole plastic top around the shifter if that makes anys sense. Anyway I got it without much effort.
