fire

Anyone's car catch on fire at 4:00am and burn to the ground while sitting in their driveway? Mine did.

The fire dept said it was electrical. They said it started in the trunk area.
My first thoughts were someone set my car on fire. I tried to put it out but it was hopeless. The fire was on the left rear and a small one on the front passenger fender.
My sunroof has been acting crazy lately, opening randomly. I was planning on removing the fuse this weekend.

I have an amp in the trunk and it does have a fuse. The fuse was blown, but there's no way to tell when it blew. Could it have started a fire without blowing the fuse?

it could have fused the link open but not very likely.

It was a wire kit for an amp. Wire the size of your pinky. not sure on the fuse.

Odd thing is it was sitting in my driveway completely idle for at least 30 hours and nothing until 3:00 or 4:00am.

So likely a 30amp fuse or something similar. Thats rough dude, my first thought was you having to argue to insurance that you didnt set the fire yourself....

Sounds like the power wire got pinched i have seen cheap glass fuse holders melt and keep the connection

I have only ever had 1 of my 2 30A fuses on my amp blow and that was because I was an idiot and forgot to remove the negative. If they said it started in the trunk then I would guess this happened but I really dont see how a fire can escape a metal casing......unless of course you have a cheap amp

No, the fuse holder was untouched. It looks new, as well as all of the power wire in the hood area. It's pristine.

When I did first read this thread I thought it was going to be Plane Crash's car that caught fire.

Wow that really sucks... sorry to hear about that.

Honestly, I don't think it was the aftermarket stereo. Every amp/sub i've ever added powered down when the radio was turned off. Unless you had the ability to turn on your stereo without the key, I don't think this would have caused it.

Either way, I hope your insurance company doesn't give you any crap and they give you a fair price for your car.

Last question:

Does the fire dept have any reason to remove the gas cap? I noticed the gas cap was near the car but completely melted. So obviously it was still on the car when it burnt. They had a large crowbar that they used to open the hood and truck(none too gently), but the fuel door has only a small dent where it appears have been pried open.

When you came out of the house, did you actually see fire coming from the gas cap area? The little plastic pin that keeps it locked isn't that strong, and it wouldn't take much to pry it open.

As far as the fire department removing the gas cap, that's a good question. As hot as that fire looked, I doubt that a melted gas cap could have been twisted off easily, if at all. How far away from the car did you find it?

The cap was removed to prevent explosion, ventilation, to stop potential pressure build up? Just a guess.

I couldn't tell exactly where the fire in the back was coming from. I only had time to try to get the fire in the front out. By the time I went to the back it was pretty much fried.

As far as the next post "removing it for ventilation purposes", seems like a bad idea. Gasoline vapors burn, not liquid. Seems like it would be inviting an explosion.
