parking

How do u guys park your car.
After stopping, do u first put the car in N, pull the emergency brake and release the foot brake pedal. then put it in park?
or do u just put the car in park and let the transmission hold the car???
a guy at AMMOCO transmission told me that , especially if you park on slopes, to use the emergency brake. so that the car is stopped by the emergency brake, not the transmission. he said that leaving the car in P will put stress on the trnamission, especially if the car in parked on a slope

true...
you can wear out the stop/tooth thing that holds the transmission. you dont have to do anything but stop, pull brake, then P. You just want to avoid that jolt of letting off the brake and lurching the car while in P.
Also, its good to startup, hold brake, go to D or R, then take off ebrake. because releasing and binding the transmission anytime is bad. I find it harder not to do when I get back in the car, not turning it off.
Also, if someone bumps your car when parked, your tranny doesnt take all the force. (yeah, it only holds the rear, but at least your car will be harder to bump and move)

e-brake, let go of the brake pedal,,,this way, not only is the car in neutral,,but has no weight on the tranny what so ever. so after the car sits with the e-brake on, i push in the foot brake and put it in P. i just notices that if i just pulled the e-brake and put the car in N, it still had some weight on the tranny,,,but if i put it in N and pulled the e-brake,,,the weight was on the e-brake...
i am not making any sence anymore
that 1800 tequila, i drank last night, is still in my stomach

Getting out of park....??
Im not sure hwy, but sometimes when im on an incline, even a slight one, its physically hard to get the shifter out of the Park mode. Is there a reason for this?? it goes eventually, but its just a pain in the *** at first.

Be sure to set the ebrake BEFORE letting of the brake. Otherwise the load of the car is on the tranny and that is why it's hard to get it out of park.

thats how I do it to park:
brake & put it in N until stopped let brakes go, E-brake up, then to P.
to go I press teh brake peddal 1/2 way, shift it into R or D depends direction, then ebrake down then go.

what about winter?
is that how you do it in the winter, too? Northern Maine gets pretty cold, and wet brakes, applying the e-brake, and letting a car sit for a few hours can sometimes mean the car won't move for a few days.
In the winter, I try not to park on hills and don't use e-brake.

Re: Re: what about winter?
snowstorm isn't the issue... it's extreme cold. I've seen vodka freeze nearly solid in Feb and that's not supposed to happen (it wasn't in *MY* trunk.. ;-). The problem is driving heats up the brakes, they get wet, car is parked, brakes freeze. I didn't believe it until it happened to me. I take the extra drive around or park farther away so I don't have to park on a hill in winter up there (parents live wayyyyy up, I live in southern NH).
