i purchased a double din radio for my 02 maxima and ive been searching through posts on dash kits. what i was wondering is whats the difference between bose and non bose dash install kits?

my car came without the bose system but has the similar shape. are the AC controlls a different size? is the radio bracket different?

There are different brackets for single din and double din radios, but the double din Bose and non-Bose use the same bracket.

The ac/heater controls are the same regardless of what radio was installed.

The only difference between Bose and non-Bose is the wire harness. The Bose harness has a few more wires in it because of Bose unique requirements. The non-Bose harness has all the wires you will need to install an after-market radio.

whats the best fitting dash kit for double din?

im not realy concerned about matching the color,which I see a lot of people fussin about.

I believe I used the Scosche kit. I couldn't get the Metra kit to work with factory brackets. (Although I hate the plastic brackets, it fits better.)

cool. for some reason crutchfield doesnt offer a double din kit. makes no sense not to. they should assume people are going to want a double din with all that space available...

worked in the stereo field for a while all the above info is accurate however once you specify you have a bose radio the will give you a harness with rca's and wires.. DON'T USE THAT ONE !! they suck badly, For starters your music won't be nearly as loud and clear as it is now, a few more techincal reasons but that one is the best reason NOT to use that one .. now wiring your system with the non-bose wiring harness is really simple nothing crazy, its all color coded to match the only additional thing to do is grab the remote blue wire ( there are 2 one is for power antenna which you don't need) the other is the remote, that wire hook it up, That will power the bose amp on and off. NOTE: also dont forget for the ground wire tie them together but run another 16awg ground from those 2 wires to something metal in the area behind the radio! Reduces whinning noise..

The kits that Metra and schoche sell SUCK! however will do the trick. They are not always perfect and need some further adjustments.. lastly I would locate the 00-01 GXE maxima vent bezel .. hard to find but its a perfect fit, keeps the oem look and has a double din opening.

As far as dash kits, the OEM GXE one is by far the best as well, I've tried them all. It's also by far the most expensive you'll find, too:

You are wrong on a couple of points. The Metra kit with the RCA's (7551) works perfectly well if you have at least 4 volt pre-outs (I've heard rare exceptions, usually manufacturers misrepresenting their output voltages). I'm currently using it with my Pioneer AVIC Z140. Also, you NEED the power antenna wire. While we don't have a power extending antenna, what we do have is an amplified window antenna. The power antenna wire will power the antenna amplifier.

i saw the GXE kit in a lot of threads but i think ill go that route later on if im not satisfied. my main concern is fitment, not to concerned with the color matching.

my car didnt come with the Bose stereo just a CD/tape combo with

Ya, your probably right I have no idea what I'm talking about. Only ran a custom car audio shop for a couple yrs. The 4volt preouts are a great feature for the radios that have that which arent many. Most obvious is an antenna adapter ..

I didn't say you had no idea what you were talking about but I do know the Bose system inside and out. And no offense to you, as I'm sure you have plenty of experience and know how, but I know people who work in and run "custom audio shops" that I wouldn't trust to install my alarm clock.

And you're right, 4V pre-outs can be hard to find but there are plenty out there in all price ranges. Barring that I would go with the PAC OEM integration system. But none of that really matters as he doesn't have the Bose system.

And by the way, just a diversity antenna adapter is not enough. The antenna amplifier must be powered. It doesn't use much power though and the power antenna wire on most aftermarket head units is sufficient.

My whole point of why ask? If your doing aftermarket all you need is the dash kit and wire harness your best off just running your own wires as the factory speaker wires suck . Man just do it right

im just going to run it all with the factory wires. im not going to be running anything fancy . just replace door speakers with coaxials, upgrade tweeters and throw 2 12's in the trunk...

Ok I got real bad radio reception. Someone wanna shoot me a pm on this powered antenna tthing. Cause it makes sense now cause I never hooked it up. Domt listem to radio much But would be nice when ppl don't wanna listen to my music on full volume

the metra kit is way better than the scosche, it actualy fits good. only complaint is that It doesnt come with the 2 screws needed to moung the kit to the rafio/factory bracket. lowes had them for $1. colir matches good and fitment is good.....

^^ a few ppl have reported the metra kit has a slight bulge on the bottom not sitting flush. in another thread a member had to slightly heat it up and flatten the bottom part.
This is likely what im going to have to do; on a quick test i had a slight raise in the middle-bottom but overall color match was good with the metra kit.

my only complaint with mine is that I had to find the 2 screws to mount the kit to the radio/bracket...

I think previously years ago i had used the scoche kit..now i have the metra.

Iv got the deck wired up and mounting in brackets tonight..but theres a small seam of a gap under the metra kit and climate control...its a gap that would bother me. I cant get all 4 holes on each side of deck to line up properly...and im dabbling with different holes used to secure radio and achieve the proper angle and minimize gap.
on another note; i havnt checked to see if that gap is normal with it out of car (as i have it all out) perhaps when i install in car, the top ac vents help push it down. ill report back
