I like catback exhausts, even if I only gain maybe 1-2 horsepower from it. The sound is pretty sweet, I just couldn't justify paying $800 for one. I'm quite happy with my ebay special, it was cheap $170, and a suitable replacement for the stock piping.

I like this thought, making your own decisions.

I wish I took some pictures of what the pipes looked like before I removed them. I thought I was gonna need a tetanus shot afterwards, lol.

Well, one purchase vs. two for starters... if Cattman sells the headers and y-pipe as two separate units. Am I reading wrong here?: http://forums.maxima.org/8737209-post1.html

I know that is for 6th gen, but it's not like I can go on the Cattman site and look there for info on 5th Gens... no headers are listed on there now. When I look through the classifieds some are selling only the headers, some as a combo. With the OBX system it's one purchase which includes a y-pipe. I know the quality in comparison is sub-par and you "get what you pay for" and all though.

But it doesn't matter what I say, most of you all are going to flame me no matter what I say, regardless if my info is correct or not.

Call him, it works much better that way. Try it, you'll see for yourself, in fact he'll probably clear this up for you better than anyone else can.
The 5.5 gens are different.
Here's my take:

The "5.5 gen Cattman y-pipe" will not fit with the "Cattman headers". As stated prior, the headers are a system, to include a unique y-pipe, that is designed to fit only with the headers, not with the separate stand alone "y-pipe". Aside from that Cattman wouldn't let you make that mistake, once you call him you'll see that.

You're learning and that's good.

The cattman y pipe standalone only works with factory precats
The header/y combo can only be uses together because the headers elim the precats so the Y is different to mate up with the headers

Its the weirdest thing. I had so many people on the org telling me that the Ypipes now sound bad because they aren't equal length.

Then I went on google and studied this exact thing...and all the other forums were saying other cars usually get MORE droney with equal length pipes and the "burble" goes away. Especially a hot topic on the WRX boards. Its kindof why Im on the path to getting a Y pipe again

I don't ever remember a 5th gen equal length y. Only the 4th gen Stillen equal y. That thing sounded awesome by the way, IMO.

Maybe it's because I'm Irish and love having a potato launcher on the back of my car.

I wished someone would make offroad "pre-cat" test pipes so we could just swap them out instead of having to punch them out.

The silencer is great for launching baby spuds and those "cuties" oranges.

Tink bout dat for a minute mah frieeend.

You remove both precats so you can replace them with these 'test pipe' units. You've already done the hard work.

You can literally now just bang the center out for FREE and reinstall. No swapping O2 sensors (can be hard/impossible sometimes if they're old/rusty), no paying for replacements, no cheap aftermarket steel or fitment issues.

It literally would make NO sense to make that product. It's less work AND cheaper to gut them. And you get a BETTER result.

This is exactly what Warpspeed and Cattman make my man...lol. Isn't that a little redundant?

He has an 02 and you have an 00, so no, that's not what they make for the 02-03.

The most expensive part is paying someone to do the actual gutting (for those who don't have the skills/tools to do the work). I figured it would be easier and cheaper to swap out the damaged cat with the test pipe.

Its actually less, our the same amount of labour. You don't have to remove the precats to gut them. Sometimes its easier, but usually can be done in chassis.

Even it the labour was identical the cost of parts would be in excess of 150+ each piece because of the more complex donut seal and the drastic change in pipe diameter when using stock exhaust manifolds.

Even if it was only 240 for the components, that's about 4 hrs labour at most shops. That's A lot of time. Short version is its cheaper and better to gut if you aren't doing headers
