Hard time starting

I have a 03 maxima. I had been having problems with gas hand not working properly. So I always have tried to make sure I have enough gas. Well one day I forgot how low I was and it run out. I had to run back into my office at work and was in there like 5 minutes most. When I came back out it had run out. Well since then its like my car doesn't want to turn over. Almost like it doesn't have any gas. It has full tank. I talked to someone and they mentioned it could be fuel pump. I didn't think it was but changed it anyways. Well it helped a little but still not starting like normal. Can anyone help me plz?

Yes it started after running out of gas. Yes it does prime. Ive even started waiting on it to finish which is like a few seconds and crank it. Its gotten a little better but still don't want to burn up starter trying to crank it.

A new thing that has actually happened to me twice today is I can be driving and it just shut off. I pull over and turn ignition off and turn back on and it cranks.

I don't know much of anything about cars. But I'll see if I can get someone to check that problem out for me. Thanks.

Any other help will be greatly appreciated.

First problem was running out of fuel and killing your fuel pump which is actually cooled when you have gas in the tank running low or out of fuel simply over heat the pump ... but as you said you have replaced the pump. Now you have a random stalling first question would be do you have an SES code? or have you checked to see if you have any pending codes? the random stalling is most likely a bad CPS which would display the codes p0340 p0345 (bank 1 p0340, bank 2 p0345)

So how would I find out those codes? Sorry, I'm clueless and having to figure it out on my own. Thanks for the help.

When you replaced the fuel pump did you also replace the fuel filter? If you let the car run out of gas it normally picks up all the crud in the tank and needs to be replaced along with the pump.

I changed mine out around 100k and it was filthy i probally should change it every 50k.

The fuel filter is about $22 at my dealership.

Here is a how to on doing it if needed.

Not sure where you live, or if you have a OBll code reader but there are a view places that will read your codes/check for any pending codes as a free service. Just let the guys here know where you live I am sure they will be able to help with the names of a few shops in your area.

I live in Anniston, Alabama. Could I take it to auto parts place like Auto Zone or Advanced?

No the only fuel filter on these are inside the fuel pump housing.

When you remove the fuel pump there is a canister filter inside the housing that the fuel pump connects too.

It's part 16400z
