only way to tell for sure is to do a cylinder leakage test and see if its the rings, but i would say it is the rings. valve stem seals will usually only let a puff of smoke out on morning startup from the oil sitting and leaking in all night. valve guides usually dont contribute that much, but i would say its rings.

if it is rings, depends on the mileage. if its low enough, you can tear into the bottom end and replace the rings etc. i would basically overhaul the engine at that point if youre going that deep. if this is a engine with 250,000 miles, drive it til it dies and swap in a low mileage engine. like i said in the other thread, my Nissan truck burned 2L a week because the rings were shot. i bagged the crap out of it for 2 years and rode it to redline every shift and it went to the junkyard with the engine running fine. just keep some extra oil in the trunk and top it off when you get gas

It only has 150000 miles. Should be nothing for this car. Ive had 3 of the same car and all burned oil but it was more like a quart every 1000 miles. Like i said this engine SHOULD have a lot of life left in it for 150000 miles. It feels strong. Pulls nice course i got headers. Id like to do a complete overhaul but deff not in the plans right now. I did however find piston rings for a decent price

Meh, if you have headers, then who cares. Buy the cheapest 40 weight oil you can get your hands on (some off brand diesel oil would be good) and keep dumping it in lol. I'd delete the PVC (might help).
I would think that it's pouring blue all the time under load, though.

I assume you're driving a lot and hard b/c there's no way in hell you're burning that much cruising around normally.

I'm confused as to who owns the car lol

mileage doesnt matter, my truck had 240,000km on it only so thats around 150,000 miles. and it burned oil probably since 200,000km. ive seen cars at work with even lower mileage burn oil bad, it just happens

i dont know if you would want to tear it all apart just to do rings, if it was my car personally i would either do everything while im in there or just let it burn oil. if it was my car, i would just run 10w-30 in it, drive the crap out of it for 2-3 more years or longer and get a used engine with 80,000 miles on it then

I could start a thread all my own, my car burns ridiculous amounts of oil. My valve covers leak, and you can smell gas in the oil, wooooo! Anyways, what I'm planning to do is just buy some forged pistons and rods with rings, get some new covers, should solve the problem and give me a boost, maybe cams while the engine is apart. It's too expensive for me to get a junkyard engine, even if it didn't burn oil I'd want to do all the things I just mentioned for my current engine. Engines here are typically between $700 and $900 so I just can't justify it, especially since I can buy some pretty banging pistons and rods for that.

If you can do rings on the cheap thats what I would do.

This is why the VQ30 is the BEST Nissan Engine. we can drive 6k miles without a doubt the oil is at perfect level not a drop missing we can go 6k miles without ever opening Hood. ya we make 30less HP but we clear that up with a $280 Y pipe...

helpful post.

Don't you have an auto tranny to neutral drop or something?

To the OP - that's a pretty decent size oil leak. With that little mileage, I would not hesitate to drop the cash on doing everything at once. Rings, pistons, valve covers...etc. But that's just me.

at some point you've gotta consider what all 6 of those auto trannies (that you neutral dropped) have in common: The driver.

Travis, if you don't know by now~those auto failures were YOUR FAULT.

Automatics are very reliable.

Mine had 180k on it and shifted like a dream before I swapped to manual~for fun.
& my girl's 4th gen is almost at 210k and shifts butter smooth on the original transmission.
Can't even feel it shift most of the time.

Take better care of your car dude.

After the first Two i never neutral dropped them. and first tranny had 225k miles n shifted beautiful till 252k then started jumpin n random gears n trippin out. the last 4 jus couldn't take the vq power. all it had was headers full back exhaust intake and few other bolt on. their just weak for a Mod'd car yes good for a Daily normal driving except 6th gens they go out for no apparent reason.

My VQ35 has gone nearly 8k without an oil change. Was low maybe a half quart at 130k on the clock.

And it's auto, slightly modded, no problems with the auto aside from changing the VB nor oil burning. Replaced 1 MAF on it since 37k.

Anyhow, to answer the OP's question, get a used engine from www.car-parts for the quickest turn around.

For better diagnostics, you can try PVC delete, change the VC's, etc. But all that might amount to the same amount of time/money and no guarantee.

90% of automatic transmission failures are from people not completely stopping going from reverse to drive/drive to reverse, and doing stupid stuff like neutral bombing. the auto trans in my 3rd gen was the one know to fail around 200,000km, the previous 2 owners drove it well and i never did any stupid stuff with the auto trans and it lasted to 429k before 1st gear started to slip a bit

if you want to do any stupid stuff, buy a 5spd.

Sometimes maybe you should keep such things to yourself. Disgraceful.

Why would you neglect your Nissan so badly?

Saw a post on the 7th gen sub forum about this. Something like 26k. It was sad and stupid. Opened up the engine and it was slugged up like it was 30 years old and been sitting for 15 years, and had 500k on it. Thought it was maybe a year old, and had 26k, and hadn't been sitting, just died.

Some people shouldn't be allowed to own cars.

True story. My 350Z burned oil like it was going out out of style. Once, there was only 2 quarts in the drain pan. When I got the Max I was surprised that it burned no oil at all, and it has 225k miles.
