The one hose on the VIAS is not a vacuum hose. It goes to the air filter box. The VIAS lets air into the intake manifold and the hose is a filtered air source. Do you have the stock air cleaner or has it been replaced?

There is a drawing in the 2001 FSM of where the VIAS unit is. Page 604 in the EC section.

Here is another thread about this. I hope the photos will help you.

I am not clear on the VIAS and swirl valves. The VIAS is for high rpms and the swirl valve is for idle/low rpms. They are both in the same spot on the engine. What I wonder is if the VIAS thing is on fed spec cars and the swirl valve is on Cali spec cars or is the "thing" on the engine a combined unit?

Compare the drawings. VIAS on page EC-604 and the swirl valve on page EC-454.

Here is a photo of the VIAS valve on my 2000 Fed spec car. I have only one vacuum (?) hose on it, while the drawings in the FSM so 2 hoses. I wonder if this is because of the FED spec and Cali differences.
