Practical Performance upgrade suggestions?

Ok so I got a used (extremely good condition) 2001 Maxima AE (standard) and I want to make some upgrades to increase performance. First of all, I'm not looking to build a race car, I commute on the highway several days a week for college and would love the performance upgrade. Speaking of college, I'm also not made of money by any means, so ideally, yes I want the best of the best for my car, but making suggestions of things that are good bang for my buck are preferred. I also want to make some upgrades to the exterior, but that's for another thread lol.

Thanks for the input. I did check the stickies but they were more of a compilation of mods and upgrade rather than specific "this is good for the money" suggestions, which is what I was looking for. For somebody like me who has limited car knowledge, having someone help point out the best options was what I was looking for.

Kool! Glad i helped out..

ya Y pipe is whats really really restricted in our 3.0s everything else flows Great! after ypipe you'll feel like u opened her up in every rpm low n high.

Checkout our 5th gen parts for sale section you can find a used y pipe great shape for as low as $150 and install is easy.

also invest in drop springs max front end sits super high n rear sits low.

I'd rather go with headers if you're spending 250$ on a y-pipe.

Yep for a 01 which will be Cali spec go with header since for a cali spec you still keep the front pre cat unlike the 00 fed spec where you lose both.

For my 00 i went with a y-pipe and love it for the wifes 02 i went with catman header (pricey but worth it) or i think obx makes one for a 01 to 02 but not sure on fitment.

95-03 headers are all the same, sans the EGR fix for those equipped with it. Which is typically 95-01.

The dynos that people link to for the y-pipes are a little strange IMO over the years. This has been discussed before.

But, headers will gain you a solid 20 whp every time, consistently on a VQ30 or 35 engine and no tuning is involved. And considering the price difference between OBX and a y-pipe, I think it's a no brainer to go with the headers.

Unless it's an 04 I35, nope. And even then no.
