Still automatic with torque converter, same thing..it wont' go faster in quarter miles.....plus if max comes with 5spd, who would want to buy a 5spd automatic???????totally useless....from performance perspective..

autostick smarty

look.....autostick is like a manual tranny with an option to drive it like an auto tranny... you would get the performance of a 5 speed but you could drive it like an automatic...so it would be essential, not usless!! and plus they are fun to drive. i would dish out an xtra 2000 for one. the TL and 300m have em, and that was one reason i seriously considered them over the max.

Really, but do you know they either run slower or about the same in quarter miles when using sport shift mode on TL?????
So, tell me they are better than 4spd auto on the maxima, besides you can just shift yourself and pretending that you are driving manual car..hahahahhaha

P.S My best has a TL and I test drove IS 300...yeah right..tell me that is manual tranny,, i purposely put the tranny on 4 th gear on the E-shift on IS 300, just to see if it is really a manual shift(which supposely stay on the 4th gear, rite?????) guess what..when i floored it..it AUTOMATICALLY downshifted to 2 gear for me..so what is the difference???????

Autostick isn't always better than an auto...

Sometimes even a stick isn't better. Remember when MB released a 5sp version of the SLK230? It was actually slower than the original automatic. The various car rags that tested it recommended it only for those who wanted to have fun with it, but not necessarily go fast.
The same is true with DC's Autostick and other manumatic trannies. Whether is faster than an auto or a manual is up to the manufacturer. Ex: The Ferrari 355F1 is actually a bit better in 0-60 than the manual b/c there's no gated shifter to mess with.
Some of the 'foolproof' systems like the Autostick can actually hamper performance oriented driving(read:ruin your fun!). Like Wustylez said, they won't let you do everything. Sometimes it just ignores you if it thinks you're trying to do something dumb. It's just for the ppl who want to delude themselves into thinking they're really driving it.

To make things clear...

The sportshift... or tiptronic... whatever...

Is just a Automatic Transmition with the option to push buttons or move the lever to switch gears... It is STILL an automatic tranny with a Torque converter and is not by any means a Manual with a "auto" mode... The only one in the u.s. with a Manual (with a clutch)is the Ferrari 360 Modena and that's over $10,000 option.... That's why it is faster than the regular 6sp...

The MB SLK... is just as fast in auto and in manual because it had a 5sp auto... with the right gearing autos can be equally fast... but for 99% of the cars the auto/sportshift is just a auto with shifting buttons/lever.....

VERY, VERY WRONG!!! These aren't manuals with computer control. The only car that does that right now is the Ferrari, and that is an amazing car. I have driven an autostick in an Intrepid and an Eclipse, and the Audi A6 2.7T with the Tiptronic. All of these do the same thing that pushing the overdrive button and downshifting do, just a hair more convenient. In the case of the Audi, unless you floor it, the computer will shift into second for you. If you did keep your foot in it, at redline, it upshifts for you. That is the only advantage, it will run to redline in Tiptronic mode unlike in the normal D mode. Also, in none of these systems can you downshift to first gear for yourself. So if you are going 10 mph and it shifted into second for you, it will not downshift even if it tell you. Also, at a stop it resets to first gear even if you leave it in a higher gear on purpose. You then have to upshift if you want (rain or snow). IMO, if you want a stick buy a stick. If you pussed out and got an auto, deal with it.

I had a lengthy test drive in an Acura CL Type S that had this feature. I have owned 5-spd cars all my life, and this car did not remind me of a 5-spd at all. Most of the time, it's just like shifting an auto tranny by hand. By the end of the test, I got tired of it and just left it in D. Yawn. Give me my 5-spd manual anyday.

New auto shift...

You can now shift your car with just a thought...
Nissan is trying to develop a transmission that can be hooked up to your brain so that you can "tell" the car when to shift and into what gear thus eliminating the wasted time of telling your arms to do it. Its suppose to improve 0-60 and 1/4 miles times. just kidding...

Actually auto-stick is indeed useless but would actually probably help the 5th gens as the set up now does not allow the auto tranmission to hit redline...perhaps either a "power" button that allows the increase in rpms to redline would help (as it does in my 99 Trooper) or the autostick might improve times since it would autoshift at redline anyway. I think we all agree that we are missing out on some power at the 6100+rpm range. Actually an even bigger help to the Maxima would be to increase the gearing so that it has five gears instead of 4...

Incorrect... well very incorrect. It's an automatic with a silly little "shifter". It's like you shifting your automatics manually. And no, it's not amamzing... it's rather silly and lame.
