01 5spd tranny leak

never figured out where leak is but leaks only when i top her off, gearoil is all on shift linkage bushing on tranny bottom, leaks about a quart then stops leaking...its a slow leak, well i havent put any in it past 6k miles its dry no leaks if i put finger in fill hole i feel its ALMOST full gears are smooth as butter.

question is should i be safe? shops say they gotta rebuild it.

Travis, putting your finger in the fill hole is not how you measure the fluid level.

well if it only leaks when you fill it up, the leak point is somewhere between the top and the point it stops leaking. Clean the whole area real good and then monitor the situation. The stuff has to go somewehre
