2001 Maxima GLE // P0430 code
Hello All,
I have had the P0430 code popping up for the past 3 - 4 months. From doing research on the forum, I am 99% sure that the culprit is most likely the front pre-cat (by the radiator).
I clear the CEL with my scanner and all of the emission readiness monitors reset within a couple of days (after going through the drive cycles) except for the catalyst code. After a week to 10 days, I either get a "pending" P0430 code on the scanner, or the CEL comes back on.
Within the past week, I began to hear a rattle that sounds like a loose heat shield. I had the car looked at by an exhaust shop that I have used in the past and trust. There is nothing loose underneath to cause the rattling and of course the car was not making the noise while I had it at the shop and out for a test ride. The shop owner advised that the rattle is most likely coming from the broken down chunks of metal in the front pre-cat (which he explained is actually the primary cat - not sure why Nissan refers to it as a pre-cat).
I know I can get an inspection sticker in Mass with one readiness monitor not reset. Here's my questions.
1) Will I damge the other cats or anything else in my exhaust system by continuing to drive the car without replacing the front cat? Car is running fine and gas mileage (22-25 MPG) has not been affected. In theory I can get a sticker now and be good for another year.
2) The exhaust shop will do the repair with a cat that I supply and charge me labor @ $75 / hour. Shop owner said that he has done many of these and the job should take somewhere between 2 - 3 hours to complete depending on how difficult it is for him to get the bolts out of the manifold. If he supplies the cat, it will cost me around $300 from him.
I'd like to know whose pre-cat should I buy. I do alot of business with Rock Auto.com and they carry Eastern Cat, Bosal, and Walker that are all around $200 +/- $10 - $15.
Other than these 3 manufacturers and Rock Auto, I'm looking for guidance as to which one I should buy.
Thanks for your help!
