possible exhaust problem??!!

the only mod preformance wise on my max is a stillen y-pipe. I put my hand in front of each tip and noticed that 1 of the 2 exhaust tips on my factory muffler is letting out exhaust. the other one is barely breathing at all. is this normal for a 2k max??

thanks

You may be experiencing this on your 2K because of the vavle in your muffler. (Diagrams on Nissan Site) It opens when you reach a certain pressure in your exaust system or when you accellerate hard, and stays closed to keep things nice and quiet on the highway.

Hey RayRey21, this is normal cuz there is some sort of clapet in the original 2K1 mufflers that open around 3000rpm and let the exhaust flow out by both pipe, this exhaust is supposed to give us (2K1 owner )5 more HP. Hope these explanations will help.

Cheers

Sorry to nit-pick here DoubleA…

ALL 2K AND 2K1 mufflers have this flap (probably 2K2 as well). It’s supposed to provide better low-end/ high-end when appropriate by having different amounts of back pressure available. It supposedly adds HP to any 5th Gen and is part of the step up from 190HP in 4th gen to 222 HP in 5th.

The extra 5 HP claimed by Nissan was only for the Anniversary Edition, where the exhaust tips point down- Nissan claims, and no one believes, that this somehow gives the AE 5 more HP. I wish.

So, to make a short story long Ray rey, your Max is perfectly normal. J

Hey Adboy, no problem, I agree with your explanations, but I was always told that it was the valve in the muffler that gave the 5 extra ponies to the 20th ann, cuz I have a 20th ann edition and the mufflers tips are not pointing down there strait so were are the extra 5hp ??? Maybe this 5hp is a bogus things...

Cheers

Dude…

Your exhaust tips should DEFINITELY be pointing down.

I’m on my second AE and both have had the down-turned tips.

Are you in Canada perhaps? The down-pointed tips are to accommodate the body kit. So Canadian AE’s might have the regular SE muffler.

The flap in the AE is no different than any other 5th gen muffler.

It ticks me off that Nissan’s explanation of the extra HP is that it comes from the down-turned pipes, yet some AE’s didn’t even come w/ them.

Those 5 HP are TOTAL BS.

Frickin’ Nissan, I swear…

Hay Adboy, I'm in Canada,it is also my my second SE and none of them had the tips pointing down, kind of strange, but I was always told that the 2K1 SE 20th have 227 HP. Thanks for your input, maybe Nissan is using a different lying strategy for Canadian customer.

Cheers

Actually the valve opens at around 2500 rpm, no biggy, my thing is below the 2500 because of the single outlet, I get a buzzing or a droaning sound, does anyone else get this or is it just me.
