Starter issues?

Hey guys, first let me say while I don't post much, I find tons of useful information on this forum. Kudos to those who are constantly helping.
I recently started having issues when starting my SE. It turns over then feels like the engine kicksback stopping the starter. Then it starts up fine. This issue is intermittent. Did a search and didn't see any other issues like this. Any ideas what might cause this? Thanks guys.

The "kickback" is a cylinder firing and pushing back at the starter. This usually happens when the engine is cranking slower than it should.

What is the voltage of the battery before you try to start the car? A good battery will be a little more than 12 volts, like 12.5. If the battery is 4 -5 years old, it could be on it's way out. Get it tested.

Is the problem more likely to happen when the engine is cold, like first thing in the morning?

I didn't check the voltage yet, but it never happens on first start. Seems like it does it on the second or third. Definitely will start with a battery check though. Thanks.
