Top Speed...5-speed Gxe...wo Gvnr
I am considering having the speed limiter removed from my 2000 GXE(5-speed of course) and would like to know just how much more top end would I pick up. It seems to me that the generation four would do around 143 or so. I am hoping for about the same out of my car. Can this be done by getting an ECU from an SE?
Also... my car is still riding on the stock 15 inch wheels. How much of a change in performance can I expect going up to some 17's? I know it will handle better but will I loose some acceleration? And while I am asking what is a decent size to run?

Get the 17s, especially since top speed is something you seem to like. 17s hurt acceleration a bit, but the benefit you get from high speed stability is WELL worth it. With 17s on my car, I could happily cruise all day at top speed
if the road allowed, but with 15s, the car feels a bit skittish up there.
I don't know about the 5th gen swapping of ECUs, but in the 4th gen, that would do it! I imagine the 5th gen would be the same.

there have been some reports that GXE 5-speeds are NOT equipped with one..including mine..
i'm not going to ask u to do a test..since it's kinda dangerous..but i don't think JWT or G-Force makes ECUs for our car..

If your jpg isn't on the net, you have to attach it. If it is, hit the "reply to post" button on this post and see how I did it.

could have gone maybe a tad bit faster, but ran out of straight roads and it started to drizzle a bit..

Z28 is limited to 108 unless you get the upgraded tires. If this is true I wish that I would have known when I bought my car. In the long run it really does not matter. I will get the limiter removed and do some mods when I get back state side. For now I will leave it stock to make sure I have no problems. Have you ever had your car on a dyno? Just curious as to how much power you are putting to the ground. When my car hits the limiter it is still pulling pretty strong at 135 so I feel confident that it will do 145 or so. I honestly thought that it would be redline limited well before 155. What size tires were you running when your spedo indicated 155? It is possible that it could have been off at little.
faster than 120mph?
Rather than start a new thread I'm just going to ask my question here. I rarely take my Max past 130kph (80mph) but last night on a long straight stretch of highway I was leading an integra on a testosterone-fuelled speed binge and I hit approximately 190kph (120mph). How long does it take to increase your speed at that point because I did not seem to be accelerating much (if at all) despite WOT? I was at about 4000rpm. Is it possible that I can't go any faster? I never got a chance to find out because I had to turn off of the highway. I have already found my maxima's acceleration to be somewhat substandard.

Even an exotic has trouble increasing speed from that point, rapidly. You only have 220 or so HP.
Your expectations are not realistic!
As an aside - what are your experiences if you brake from that speed? Even Ray Charles can go fast in a straight line!

To be honest I like the factory 17's that come on the SE's. Surely someone will have some for sale when I am in the market. Until then 135 is all I have. BTW when you cruise at 110 or so these things still get about 21 mpg which I think is still pretty damn good. I drive an Alfa 164 with a 2.0 four banger and it will get over 30 mpg at the same speed. Not really important but I found that to be very impressive.

As far as braking from that speed it was not a problem. I didn't try braking hard but why would I if I didn't have to?

I mentioned that my car's acceleration seemed substandard because 8.22sec is my best 0-60 so far (measured with g-tech/pro) and I'm still concerned that there is something amiss with my particular maxima. I can't just blame Calgary's altitude.

Check out http://members.home.net/rabeveridge/html/about_hc2.html for the hp calculator I used.
I was just asking about speed limiters and ECU swaps in another thread. I'm fairly sure that JWT and G-Force don't make ECUs for the 5ht gen. I was also told that puting a SE ECU into my 2000 GLE was imposible. Jet supposedly makes a piggy back ECU (400), and Haltech makes a whole new ECU (1145).
Does anyone here know anything for sure about swaping an SE ECU without a limiter with my GLE ECU?
Your car hit 155 with a intake and a y-pipe? Sweet!
I have the stillen intake and S-03 tires, and my car is just begging to be taken fast. Unfortunately it cuts out at 130.
How did your car handle at 155? Could you have reasonabley gone faster? Also, how big of a difference did your y-pipe make when you put it in?

I think another reason for the difference in achieving top speed you're talking about is due to the fact that you have an auto, whereas the others have 5 speeds. So above 100 mph, the quickest way for the 4 speed auto to reach top speed is to s t r e t c h 3rd gear all the way, and then when 3rd is finished, switch to 4th. SInce your gears are spread out a little more, acceleration won't be as great.
With the 5 speeds, we go in 4th gear, to 120 mph rather quickly, switch to 5th gear which will still go to 130 rather quickly, then the stretch (not as long as auto) to top speed. The 5th gen has a variable intake manifold, so top speed is probably achived alot quicker (from 130 mph) than my 4th gen 5 speed. The 4th gens seem to top out around 143 mph with a few mods. 5th gens obviously higher.

yup..just an intake and y-pipe. that's it!
the car was rock solid at that speed(i had my suspension mods at the time minus the Tokicos)..i had to let up the gas pedal cuz i was running out of straight road really really fast(at 155, everything looks like blur
)..i guess i could have squeezed a couple more mphs..since the car was still accelerating(although quite slowly at that speed)..
I also have 2k GXE 5spd with 15 steelies and hubcaps...Car just doesnt feel safe on the highway, it is all over it. The fastest I went so far was 120 mph. I have started saving up some cash for some inexpensive rims.
Damn, you make me want to drive on those west coast roads real bad.

Oh well someday she will have decent rims and tires.

i said the above cuz there was a debate that all non-SE models came with a speed limiter(what a load of manure)...then it turned out that Kev's car had one, and more SE auto people came out complaining their car hit the limiter..so, my guess is that it's not the trim level, but it's ur tranny that determines how fast u can go..

One possible explanation as to why some have one and some don't is what tires the car came from the factory with. Mine has the sucky 15 inch steel rims and "H" rated tires. It is possible that cars with 16 inch tires and wheels do not come with a limiter. Just a theory but it would make sense. Could also have something to do with the build date. I bought my car in late 2000 after the 2001's were already released. Had to cash in on the rebate since the car had not changed from 00 - 01. Again all are possible but who really knows.
No. You're exactly right. The speed limiter is put on because of the tires the car came with from the factory.
