Driver side window does not roll up

Greetings,

For the last few mornings my driver side window would only go down about an inch. I assumed it was due to the cold weather and that it was frozen. This morning I tried again, brought it up and down a few times, it eventually lowered about halfway, but now won't go back up.

It will raise and lower about an inch, but other than that it won't move any more. I don't hear the motor trying to move, and every other window is working fine. Is this a common error? I've searched google and this forum but couldn't find anything that fits my problem.

Mine did the same thing about a year ago, ended up being the motor. I replaced the motor and track assembly. Works fine now, though the aftermarket one I put in isn't quite as peppy as the original. Not a hard job, even found a couple vid's online which made things easier knowing what to expect.

NOTE*** You'll find replacements with either a 2 pin or 6 pin plug, my 2003 SE TE ended up being a 6 pin plug. I definitely recommend pulling the door panel off and confirming which you have before you order... unless of course someone with more knowledge can tell for you without having to pull the panel.

If you happen to need the 2 pin, PM me, I have a brand new one in the box for a great price.

The 6 pin motors are for the front doors because of the auto up/down built into the motor. 2 in motors are for the rear doors.

Thank you, I took apart my door last night, I live in NY so going even a few days with the window down during late November is out of the question. Turns out the wheel on the motor was jammed. There was a frayed piece of metal cable that was preventing it from spinning and moving the window anymore than a few inches in either direction.

I couldn't find any pics online of what the wheel is supposed to look like so I didn't know if the metal wire that frayed was supposed to be attached or if it's something that got lodged in the motor and jammed in there. Either way I knew I had to clear the jam, didn't want to completely remove the motor as that would have been beyond my skill level, but I was able to slide in some tools and cut out some of the frayed wire and smooth down the rest so the window would atleast close, right now its moving up and down without any resistance. I realize I'll eventually need to replace the motor but for the time being (ie winter) I'm fine with it.

I bet you won't roll it down all winter. Been there. IMO, if you have the skill to take your door panel off, locate the window motor, diagnose issue and correctly put it back together then you have the skill to replace the motor.

The regulator is an assembly. It consists of the motor and the regulator itself. You can buy either of these 2 parts separately. The frayed wire is part of the regulator.

Here is a photo of a right rear door regulator. For the left side of the car, the regulator would be flipped left to right. The front door regulators are very similiar. The window glass bolts onto the plate on the left side and the motor bolts onto the plate on the right side of the photo. You can see a wire cable wrapping around a pulley, which is what is fraying (I think).

Prices for 2003 Maxima using Rock Auto prices, Dorman brand:

Motor only = $63.79
Regulator w/o motor = $29.79
Regulator with motor = $85.97

Yep the window regulator is the culprit, since those pulley with the wires that get bound up, the plastic pulley does wear out and end up binding up the cable ulitmately why your window won't go up. Not hard job to do, however be aware they probably are riveted on the door frame, which you need to drill it out and end up getting a new set of rivets to rivet it back on, unless the new regulator assembly comes with screws, which I rarely seen it.

The regulator is not riveted on the Maxima. A 10 mm socket for all bolts used - regulator to door, motor to regulator, glass to regulator.

Replace window regulator, now no auto up/down

I just replaced my driver's side window regulator with a Dorman 741-723. Now the auto up/down feature doesn't work. I read in a review that there is a button on the regulator/motor that controls that. Can anyone tell me where that is? Dorman tech support is closed on Saturday.

Thanks!

i would suspect the aftermarket part, dorman parts have been defective out of the box for me, get oem maybe to rule that out. you can return your aftermarket dorman part as well.
