Engine Identification

Hello All,

I'm in the process of replacing the 3.5l engine out of my 02 Maxima that had compression issues and other problems.

I picked up a used engine out of what I was told was an 06 Altima. Since I did not see the vehicle it came out of I can't verify it was an 06 or not. Can someone tell me where to look on the engine etc to find the engine/year identification?

I've tried searching for something online and haven't found anything to point me in the right direction.

Thank you,

I do not think that the engine will have any identification. Does it look like your stock VQ35? If yes, you should be fine. I don't know why, but Nissan does not like to put info on their engines. If you can get a VIN number you could run a carfax on it, but you still have to trust the seller that the VIN is for the engine they are selling.

Look at the engine serial number. It should start out VQ35.
VQ - Altima or Maxima
35 - 3.5 liters

If it starts VG, it came out of a Pathfinder or Frontier.

Yes, it looks like my stock VQ35, other than intake manifold differences.

Strange that Nissan didn't put any identification info on their engines.

I'm positive it is a VQ35DE. I just wanted to know if it was one of the newer versions that most likely won't have the oil burning issues.

Thanks,

Pathfinders have had VQ's since 2001. Frontiers since 2005.

What's different on the IM's? External EGR on the "new" engine? That would be the only difference between the 02-03 Maxima engine/IM and 04+ Maxima/Altima engine.
