Speedometer is only HALF right!

2002 6sp 145k. On my way to work my speedometer showed about half of the speed I am actually travelling. It still goes up and down but is obviously uselesss. I won't have time to look at this for a long while so hopefully it is a cheap mechanic fix. Anyone experience this? Curious where I should start especially since I try to avoid car electronics. Thanks for any help.

P.s. phones are not allowed at my work facility so be patient for a response.

Sounds like maybe the speed sensor needs to be changed.

all of a sudden eh? You didn't do any work on the cluster or anything, and it's never done this before? Do you have any CEL codes?

Only my superiors get computers and I am not even sure if they get outside access.

Maybe. Would that cause intermittent issues because when I left work everything was fine.

Yeah all of a sudden. No work on cluster since that cluster led thread. First time happening and no CEL.

Thanks for patience.

It's probably an ABS sensor. In our cars, the 6MT particularly, an abs sensor is used as a vehicle speed sensor. I haven't looked into it further and I'm living with the same intermittent issue. My abs light is on also.

My abs light has been on for over a year. Idk if that makes your idea more or less likely.
