on my 03 max I was thinking about a k and n panel filter but some people told me the oil in it would cause my mass sensor to go bad any thoughts on this

main thing with K&N is they dont really work, its proven that to actually filter particles, the filter needs to be plugged with debris to snowball more debris to be filtered.

and yes the oil can make your MAF go bad if it reaches it, traditional paper filters are better than K&N

Get an AEM dryflow. same price as K&N but non-oiled. I got one & it works great--better than the old paper filter.

I have been beyond pleased with my AEM cone. Never buy K&N again.

Although, one thing I have learned, K&N is fine if new....the oil is not so thick it will likely damage your MAF. I've found it's typically after improper re-oiling, where there is too much applied (very easy to do) and the oil absolutely will get pulled into the intake stream. Point is though, makes the K&N obsolete by dry filter standards given you can clean a dry flow just like the K&N but without the risk.

you guys are smoking crack, i've had k&n for years and the only way you'll screw up the maf is if you soak the filter with the spray. i had the original one for 100,000+ miles and i replaced it cause i stepped on the edge and crushed it or i'd still have it in the car. you don't even need to spray the filter for a year when first installing, then, after you clean it you lightly spray one side and put it back in. i felt a difference the first day after buying a k&n filter and never looked back.

Never really understood the craze behind those performance filters. Just use a regular paper filter, change every 12-15K miles and fuggedaboutit. Purolator, Wix, hell even Fram filters are all fine.

Well I'm not gonna recommend a bunch of different filters since OP was asking about K&N and how it can affect the car specifically.

I've had both a panel K&N when I first started with GAB mod, now I've had a K&N cone for 3/4 of the year and zero problems. I can't see for the life of me how a MAF can get ruined by a K&N unless you mess it up with too much oil like "max ride" said above.

And far as filtering goes, to me K&N is better than dry-flow because where I live we have a ton of dust, after a few days of driving there is always a nice film of dust on the whole engine and I can see the K&N is effectively absorbing all that dust in the filter oil. I've cleaned mine once so far, before winter began and still have no problems with the oil.

IMO = K&N is good and does it's job very well, just remember you need a very fine thin mist of that oil spray when cleaning, not much at all and should be all good.

I am using K&N filter, you need to clean this filter with their special cleaner and re oil it with their special oil. It means you will spend money just to clean and re oil this filter. I am highly recommend the two dry air filter, that you can clean with ordinary house hold cleaner (simple green) and wash it water and let it dry no need to reoil.

K&N filters are just fine.. Have the messed up a lot of MAFs? Yes. Why? Cause people like to get way to carried away when oiling them.. It only takes a little bit. Been running K&N filters for years. On my truck,car, fourwheeler, Sprintcar, everything and never had a problem at all. Also a mechanic for years and have only seen a problem when people go crazy with the oil.

14 years and nearly 300,000 miles on 3 cars and only 2 MAF failures. And I would put a good guess that the reason the MAF's failed was not due to oiling. Common sense > * .

Although, AEM is a good option as well.
