What is the switch by the headlight?

http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...ent-101-a.html

The part that connects to the middle 2 bolts above the headlight, what is it and what's its function? The rubber cover on mine is torn, do I have to replace the whole part to get a new rubber cover? If dirty gets in there is that a problem?

I always thought that switch was connected to the car security system, so that the car reacts the same way as if one of the doors is open or tampered with, while the alarm is on.

That's the switch that activates the panic alarm if the hood is opened with the car locked and the security is armed.

If it's just a plastic looking button under the rubber it does sound like part of the factory alarm as previously stated.
