break in period

Just wondering what the break-in period for a 2002 Max SE is... I've heard people say that there isn't one since the newer engines don't have to be "broken in".. others have said you shouldn't go over 70.. yada yada blah blah blah.. I need some real advice from Max owners.. what do you guys think?

Take it easy for a while (I think the owners manual recommends 1000 miles). After that, have some fun

you are not just breaking in the engine..

tranny, CVs, and wheel bearings are also being seated. the reason for not going over 60mph is to keep the heat down in the bearings and seals. That may not be an option on the interstate, but just be reasonable and follow the guidelines as best you can... it quite possibly would save you money later in the cars life.

The last 2 cars I baught new were a 1989 Honda Perlude SI and my current 1999 Maxima SE. Both cars were romped on right from the start. Not over done, but they both saw near redline performance on day 1. Even my dad put the pedal to the metal on my Maxima on day one. He took it right up to 6,000 RPM's.

My Honda had 170,000 miles on it. Never used a drop of oil, never leaked, never let me down. Ran perfect for the 10 years I had her.

My Maxima now has 41,000 miles on it. Runs perfect, very strong, doesn't use a drop of oil even after the switch to synthetic.

My Yamaha however (1989 FJ1200) big *** motor, and only air cooled, was driven very gently for the first 1,000 miles. Now going on 13 years old with over 50,000 miles on it also runs perfect, doesn't leak but uses about a 1/2 quart of oil every 2,000 miles.

So break it in gently or drive it hard. Either way if you get a well built and refined motor, things should be just fine for it's entire life as long as it's maintained correctly.

Break it in the way you plan to drive it. If you're gunna drive it hard don't be breaking it in like a grandmother.

If there were any serious breaking in going on Nissan wouldn't be saying wait 'till 6,000 miles for the first oil change.
