New Member with Hesitation question

Hey all. I picked up a 2000 Maxima SE about 3 weeks ago with 116k miles on it. Car is lowered on BC coilovers, short shifter and carbon tails. I have since added a 7 inch screen. Not looking to get fancy with this car but just drive it for a while.

Couple things I've noticed with the car that I need help with:

The car is dog slow. I know this car is a porker but I thought with a 5 Speed and the V6 it would have more pep than this. I have noticed that when I shift out of every gear from 2000-2500 RPM I have a noticeable lack of power. I have changed the MAF, fuel pump and air filter. These changes have helped slightly but the car still hesitates, what is causing this?

Is there a good way to boost my AM signal? After adding in the 7", I noticed my espn signal has dropped drastically and I get a constant whistle.

Also, when I'm leaving the gears and normally driving, I notice there is a "humming Like" sound coming from the front. I can't distinguish if it's axles or anything.

But that's the end of my rants. Hopefully you all can provide some guidance.

Thanks.

hesitation

First of all you need to hook up your vehicle to OBD II Scan tool to check for error code and impending error code. When was the last time the spark plugs was change. You need the OEM Genuine Nissan MAF sensor at any Nissan dealership or OEM Aftermarket MAF sensor at Rockauto. Aftermarket MAF sensor of autozone, pepboys, advanceauto or online car store with erase the code but the problem persist. Check the PCV valve and the PCV tubing if soaked with oil. If soaked with oil you need to instal PCV oil catcher (ADD W1 at ebay)

^ I'm starting to think you're sponsored by ADD or something.

..and no need to run out and buy a catch can for your car.
If there is oil in the tube for the PCV, replace the PCV first if it doesn't rattle and clean the tube..if you notice oil collecting after that and have money burning a hole in your pocket, sure; it's not entirely a bad idea.

The car isn't throwing any codes. The MAF sensor is brand spanking new. The car had a full tune up less than 2000 miles ago.

I have recently been told that my tranny may be going bad. This would make sense bc the noise comes when I'm driving or accelerating. What sucks the most is I just had the clutch done 200 miles ago.

Is your transmission leaving fluid when parked overnight?

Was the MAF OEM?

ok, so I believe I've narrowed down the "clunking noise". When I popped the hood, I noticed this white "fluid container" that was clearly empty. After reading through the FSM, I still can't figure out what it is. Is this the auto tranny fluid holder? BTW, I have a 5 Speed.

Another thing I noticed is the gaping hole from under neath the ram air intake. Is that suppose to be open?

I am not connected or any sponsor of ADD W1 PCV oil catch can. I initially used the JEG oil catch can , I have noticed the tip (inside diameter) of the PCV tubing attached to the intake manifold still coated with oil. I updated to this oil catch can because it is big enough (size of coffee cup) to handle the high vacuum of the engine, the tip of the PCV tubing attached to the intake manifold is dry (no oil). When I installed the NWP block plate , no oil inside the intake manifold (no blowby oil). I believed those small catch can failed to prevent the blowby oil from reaching the intake manifold. The price of this ADD W1 catch can is reasonable ($99.00) compare to mishimoto ($159-$399)

No, that reservoir has nothing to do with your tranny fluid. That is where any water that comes through your air intake gets trapped and evaporates. You are missing the elbow that connects the air intake to that reservoir. That would have nothing to do with the issue you are describing. If you want you can remove that reservoir and be fine.

IIRC the 2001+ maximas dont even have that reservoir and the air intake was capped with a small hole in the bottom for water to just leak out on the ground. It would be such a small about of water it would not affect anything.

Thank you. Seems like a pretty rediculous non necessity.

Could be an option. Are yours clunking?

this is a problem with auto trans when the car gets up in age, OP i doubt this is an issue with your 5 speed.

I'm pretty sure it has to be that resevoir making the clunking sound. I'll remove it this evening.

I still can't figure out the hesitation which is the main problem.

We replaced one bad engine coil. Major difference.

It was worth the price of correct diagnosis at an in-laws shop so we didn't waste time fishing, which we are always doing just because we are do it yourself mechanics too! imho it was worth the money spent.

Good luck!
