Key and remote stolen

Hi all,

I dropped my keys without realizing it a last week. I know where I dropped them, but they're gone. Somebody picked them up and kept them.

I'm getting a new key cut and it and my other keys programmed. Is there a way to change the channel on my other remote and the car so the lost one will no longer unlock the car? I figure whoever got the keys will come back to the parking lot to see what car lights up when he pushes the buttons.

Thanks,
Glenn

In the owner's manual, Page 3-2, or the Pre-driving checks and adjustments section, it states:

NISSAN INTELLIGENT KEY™
Your vehicle can only be driven with the Intelligent Keys which are registered to your vehicle’s Intelligent Key system components and NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System components.
Never leave these keys in the vehicle.

As many as 4 Intelligent Keys can be registered and used with one vehicle. The new keys must be registered by a NISSAN dealer prior to use with the Intelligent Key system and NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System of your vehicle. Since the registration process requires erasing all memory in the Intelligent Key components when registering new keys, be sure to take all Intelligent Keys that you have to the NISSAN dealer.

A key number plate is supplied with your keys.
Record the key number and keep it in a safe place (such as your wallet), not in the vehicle. If you lose your keys, see a NISSAN dealer for duplicates by
using the key number. NISSAN does not record key numbers so it is very important to keep track of your key number plate.

A key number is only necessary when you have lost all keys and do not have one to duplicate from. If you still have a key, your NISSAN dealer can duplicate it.
So, TL;DR. Bring all your keys that you still have to the programming session, and those will be the only keys that will work.

Hi Akiyukio,

Thanks for that. My concern is actually trying to keep the thief out of the car. If they find the car by walking the lot pressing the buttons and get in, even though they can't start the car, at some point I have to put my reg/ins papers back in the car (it's the law). I don't want them finding my address.

So, taking away the remote as a way for him to find what car he has keys for will make me feel better.

Cheers,
Glenn

How many 5th Gen Maxima's are there usually in your parking lot? You can of course make the old keyfob inoperable but the key will still work. The good news is that your alarm will go off if the door is opened with the old key.

I just realized I'm in the 5th gen section, not 7th gen section, so some of my info and the owner's manual pages may be wrong... Woops.
At any rate though, the answer for programming is still the same:
Yes, once you enter programming mode, for remotes or for keys, it will clear out the old ones, so no worries there.

As a side note, there are two programming modes: One for keys and one for remotes.
I think the dealer is the only one that is able to program keys to the car, whereas you can program remotes yourself. I forget the programming sequence though.

Uh, this might, be wrong.
As far as I know, there is no transponder at the door that will tell if the key being used to open the door is a registered key or not. My basis for this is information is from taking the side panel off my 4th gen a few times and inspecting the lock mechanism.

The programming process for remotes starts out by "disabling" all existing remotes. If you don't have a replacement remote yet, just start the programming process and when you are supposed to press a button on the remote, open the car door. No remotes will work on you car now.

But if someone has the key, they can open the door with it.

To program the remote(s) follow this procedure.

1. Unlock all doors and get in car.

2. Close and lock all doors with power door lock switch on driver's door.

3. Insert the igniton key and completely remove from the ignition switch
at least 6 times within 10 seconds. The hazard warning lamps (both turn
signals) will then flash twice and all previous codes will be cleared.

4. Turn ignition key to "ACC" position.

5. Push the "Lock" button on the new remote controller once. At this time,
the car learns the new ID code. The hazard warning lamps (both turn
signals) will then flash twice.

If you are programming just one remote, go to step 10.
If you need to activate additional remote controllers, continue with Step 6.

6. Manually unlock the driver's door only then lock again with door lock
****.

7. Push lock button on the additional remote controller once.

8. Hazard warning lamps (both turn signals) will then flash twice and
additional remote is programmed.

9. For additional remotes, go back to step 6.

10. When done, open the driver's door to exit programming state.

NOTE: A maximum of 4 remotes can be programmed to any ONE car.

Thank you Dennis and everybody else. I will do this with the remote. I already have the new key cut and chips reprogrammed. I figure I will scan my registration and insurance papers and keep them on my phone instead of in the car to avoid having my address available to the bastard.

Cheers,
Glenn
