What could it be?

2001 Max SE, runs excellent, no codes, just perfect. Have a slight problem, the car while stop and on D, make like its going to turn off, but it doesn't. It does it at temperature but only when stopped. Revs perfect and it idle the way it should, what could it be?

2001 max

VQ30DE: you can clean the throttle body (mechanical)
VQ35DE: i will not recommend cleaning the throttle body assembly. (electronic)
Do not move the butterfly.
Hook up your vehicle to OBD II scan tool with live feed to detect IMPENDING errror code.

^^ Checking/cleaning TB is a good idea, even though when I looked at mine it was pristine clean and I doubt many 5th gens have much dirt there due to oil issues, unlike the 5.5 gens..

I would advise you do two things, hook up a live scanner and log some data, check your vacuum at idle, should be high.

Then check your PCV valve, mine was semi-clogged and would exhibit the symptom you describe until I changed it...specifically at temps (cuz it stuck when it got hot, it would work fairly OK when it was cold). It would cause low idle vacuum, especially on decelerations and coming to a stop, and then would drop the idle down a bit like it was gonna shut off, but never did and came back up..

what you just described is exactly the culprit. I got the pcv valve last week going to install it maybe later today is raining a lot here in Philly plus is cold. Im going to clean the TB also and hopefully that symptom will go away.

Word. Its a crap day here in VA too, hopefully rain will stop later so u can pluck that thing in there..

Only thing I can add for now is this = not sure what brand PCV valve u got, but most aftermarket valves dont fit all the way in the hole...I got one from CarQuest/Napa initially but ended up going for an OEM one, since its so cheap anyway...

Good luck to you!

I hear that. I'm about 90% positive the duralast will not fit all the way...but I guess you'll find out soon enough lolz

how long have you been in the philly area? always thought u were in FL

PCV, and throttle body are good suggestions, keep us posted,

i swear I had this same symptom one time, stoped at a red light and it almost shut off randomly at idle, and then didnt.
only happened once or twice tho.

Relocated to Philly almost 2 years ago, crazy to go back to Florida, new car got broken into last night so now I'm thinking really hard about going back home... lmao

Cleaned the TB and replaced the PCV valve last night will test the car later today and see if the problem is gone.

my car shut off in the middle of driving (possibly coasting) on the highway. lost power brakes, power steering everything. sat 5 mins started up like nothing happened.

im really sketched out by it, almost want to not drive it anymore untill i have a reason on why it did that. so I know how u feel.

have you looked into IACV idle air control valve and CPS crank position sensor?
those were the two biggest things that related to me with this random shut off and "almost shut" off.

I might look into it, but if it were any of those the car will shut off, mine doesnt, it is just an intermittent when the car is hot and on D.

The weird part of this thread is that it runs and idle good! But when stopped in "D"(Idle) you have an issue! Check your coilpacks for missing using a timing light with the inductive pickup around the electrical harness!

finally the car shows a code P01320. A coil has to be giving up. Have to run some test to find whose the one making the issue. I cleared the code will see if it comes back again.

Code is gone and today the car just ran perfect, like brand new.... will keep on driving it to see if it fails again.
