I got a pioneer avic which fit almost perfectly. I have a 99 infiniti I30 though but its a awesome deck. just doing the head unit has increased sound quality exponentialy.

I feel for you listening to that crappy stock bose system man...it was one of the first things that had to go when I scooped my max a couple of years ago. My setup now is a pioneer double din, and the sound quality of the stock speakers increased incredibly!

These cars are worth about $3500?

Audio system could run upwards of $600... That's 17.14% (~17%) of the value of the car.

I wouldn't say it's money blown at all...you need to replace the speakers and bypass the bose amp altogether for much better sound. the ohm rating for the bose speakers is set up for that bose receiver and if you do not change speakers and/or continue to use the bose amp/speakers with your new HU you will not get the full potential out of it and you will suffer from very low volume. I ended up re-wiring direct from my HU to my new speakers and the volume is much better.

Now here is the catch….wiring through your door jamb can be a PITA in the front especially, so I took a shortcut and intercepted the speaker wires coming out of the bose amp to the front doors and ran it that way. Put 6 1/2" Pioneers in the front door and decent sound. Too bad the rear on these cars only take 5 1/4 in the doors, so they don't do much by way of bass.

So? Anything you put on/in your car can be viewed in the same way.

By the way....system could run lower as well.

I have replaced all my speakers, got a head unit, 2 amps, and 2 12" subs.

Honestly, I only recently replaced my tweeters with a component set from Infiniti, as I had started my upgrades by simply changing my door speakers and installing subs, but didn't consider how amazing aftermarket tweeters would sound compared to the stock. It takes time and money, but replacing any of the speakers in general is a real upgrade when paired with an aftermarket head unit. Subs will do the trick to start with, but amped door speakers and tweeters were the next level for me, as they helped level with the power of the subs. All of it comes together wonderfully.

So yeah, really anything is an upgrade from stock.
