02 Auto Climate Damper Positions

I have an 02 GLE with Auto Climate Control. When you put it on Auto and set the temperature to 65 the A/C is on and there is a little bit of air that blows on the floor. When you push the mode button and cycle through the various positions while looking through the holes in the vents on the drivers side floor you can see the damper motor move and the damper inside move to the various positions. When the Mode is set to face or upper vents the damper position is just up slightly not sealing all the way down. The only time that damper door goes completely shut is when you push the windshield defrost button.
Questions:
1. Is it normal for that damper door to stay slightly open allowing some air to blow on the floor? (makes your feet kinda cold sometimes)

2. Is it normal when you have it in the floor position to have some air coming out of the upper vents in the middle? (In this case I know you can just close those vents manually but not sure what the normal behavior is supposed to be.)

Thanks for the help.

See the chart on page 75 in the link below for what vent has air coming out of it for the button pushed.

But from what I think you are saying, what you have is not normal. When an outlet is supposed to be off, a little bit of air could still be coming out of it. But how much air is a little bit is hard to say.

If you scroll down to the bottom of page 81, there is an adjustment procedure that maybe would solve your problem.

Excellent - thank you - yes you are right there is a slight bit may 10% of the air is on the floor when it's on Vent/Face setting. I'll look into the procedures in the manual you sent along.

Thanks again for the manual it was very helpful in diagnosing the different door positions for the mode motor. Ultimately the problem ended up being the face door not being connected properly to its pivot point. Every time you change the mode this door would only move partway by airflow not properly connected and every time you turn off the air you could hear something drop. I took out the front vents and was able to reach inside and move the door freely without any obstructionso I knew it must've come disconnected. It's quite a twisted operation to get all the way up inside the car on your back but I was able to reconnect it by just popping over the pin with a long flat blade screwdriver.

Working under the dash is only for the agile. A good vocabulary of swear words is extremely helpful for this.

But congrats on finding the problem and getting it fixed.
