Automatic Transmission: Starting in second?
Automatic Transmission: Starting in second?
OK, here's a strange question.
Is it possible to reprogram something in the transmission so that when you put the gear selector in "2," the vehicle stays ONLY in second gear, instead of LIMITING second gear as the highest drive range?
I've experienced both designs. Some cars use 2 as a "always in this gear" mode, and others as a "shift no higher than this gear" mode. When it's slippery out, I like the car to start out in second to lessen wheelspin. I've noticed that my i30 uses "2" in the Limiting fashion, which doesn't help me much.
A friend of mine who is into Volvos says that his cars have a "winter" mode which does something like this which I'd like to emulate.
Thoughts?

Yeah... I get that. But is our transmission "electronic enough" that one could theoretically get in there somehow through the OBD2 connector and tell it to behave differently? I mean, we can adjust timing and such that way. Just throwing ideas out there.
I guess the main determination is "Is the gearshift a lever which actually operates hydraulic valves and adjusts band position, or is does it instead flip switches which control an electronic gearbox?"

It's a mechanical cable that shifts the gears, you cans ee this when you have the tranny pan off, you could also hear it when you shift the gears when outside the vehicle. It's an 03 Nissan not a 15 German car
The Suprastick V4 was thought to be able to do it, but it was found out that it only works on 4th gens since ours have CAN so nope. I'm sure you could find something to mess with the TCM to do it, but IMO, not worth the T&E.

But seriously, LSD is pretty much the only option.
