Slammed on brakes, car died, wont restart

Writing from side of the road while I wait for tow truck.

Car is 2001 i30, auto.
Had to slam on brakes from 20mph. Car stalled, will not restart.

Waited 10 min or so, would start and run for a second then die (like when you forget to plug MAF sensor back in)

Any ideas?

Just got it to run for 5 minutes, was able to move to safe location

While driving slowly transmission felt "bumpy" like it was going in and out of neutral.

Rhen thr engine quit again. It was a "power is cut" shutdown (as if the key was used) as opposed to a sputtering fuel starvation stall.

15 min later...
Correction. This time i held it at 1500 to charge the battery a bit after all this cranking. It stumbled, sputtered, and stopped.

Fuel pump?

With a weird problem like this, there are probably lots of possibilities. Maybe the fuel pump but it is a pretty reliable item. The crankshaft sensor is another possibility, but I think the MAF has a higher probability. If you unplug the MAF, the engine should start and stay running, but the engine will die the instant you drop it in drive.

The tow truck just dropped us all off at home. I'm guessing it's likely to be something "electronic" than the fuel pump since the "Service Engine Soon" light is on.

I suddenly can't remember. Do I have a "check engine" AND "service engine soon" light?

Dennis -- looks like you win it.

P0335 - Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit.

Now. Tell me WHY. Why would suddenly slamming on the brakes make a sensor say "I'm outa here."

make sure your battery cables are secured tightly and are snug.

Battery: Checked.

OK. Got under the car and realized that the doofus at O'Reileys sold me the wrong sensor. The code (P0335) points towards the sensor on the flywheel end. We discussed this, we looked at numbers, and he gave me the other side's sensor. Thinking back to our conversations, he couldn't seem to keep track of whether I had the 3.0 or the 3.5 and that's why he was insisting I only had one CPS and 2 Cam sensors while I said the opposite.

I'm under the car and displeased, so I got out my toothbrush and WD-40 and cleaned the beegeesus out of the connector and all contact points, cleaned up the sensor, and put it all back together just for the heck of it. Let it run to full operating temperature. No stalls like yesterday, no SES light, seems to be fine.

If I didn't have you guys to ask, I would probably order both sensors from a dealership who sponsors the forum and replace them both as good measure, and keep my meanderings close to home until I've swapped them out.
