Starter Issue and yes I searched.

Ok guys before everyone gets all up in arms i have spent a whole day searching and cant find my exact problem. I am traveling and just need the help so I apologize if I overlooked it.
2000 Maxima GXE 5 speed M/T 162k miles HIDs are the only Mod. Replaced my starter about a month ago with a brand new one. A day or so ago it began to make a strange noise on the first starting attempt. The sound is the same as if the car is running and you turn the key to the start position. On the second start attempt it cranks up fine no problem. Optima battery just tested fine and the alternator as well.

Could this be a relay issue?
I read the TSB that comes with the starter but I couldn't find the blue relay on the fender wall

The relay box in front of the battery's diagram has rubbed off but on the row closet to the battery there is a brown square relay and a blue rectangle one. Is this one of them?

Thanks in advance

When you say brand new starter, brand new, remanufactured and where purchased?

It sounds like the starter solenoid is working too slowly. It's supposed to push the small gear on the starter into the ring gear on the flywheel THEN start spinning to turn the motor over. If it actuates too slowly, the gear will be spinning by the time it tries to mesh with the flywheel gear.

Sometimes this happens when the starter is old and wearing out. I'm guessing that this is a rebuilt starter and it's having a problem.

It doesn't sound like something that's going to strand you while you're traveling or cause any major damage. I'd warranty out that starter when you get home.

Your rationale definitely matches the sound i am hearing. I was under the impression it was a new starter when I picked it up but that box went back with the core so who knows. Glad it won't strand me but considering that I have a short ram intake and it is just two bolts i will warranty it out for sure. Thanks

Since it's not switching between power and no power to the starter the relay is probably still OK right?

If you had to return the core, it's a remanufactured starter, and with the AZ reputation for
electrical components, just return it and hopefully the next one will be better.
A few years ago my son purchased a reman from AZ for his Toyota, 3 starters later he got his
money refunded and purchased a starter from another, more reputable, supplier.

Yep, never buy moving parts from Junkozone.

No issues with the one I've got from Advance (80 bucks with code and tax).

Brand new TYC on Amazon for 73. I know that's way cheaper than local stores.

^^this^^ If you gave a core, it's a reman.

There's only one relay for the starter and it's obviously getting power. If not, it wouldn't do anything. The starter gets a signal and handles everything internally. If it's not working right it's the starter.

They'll have to test the one you return and it may not fail in their test. If they say it passes tell them it's "intermittent" and stand your ground. They have to include a "failed" slip from their test machine in order to process a return. They can, and will, force it to fail if they have to.

I bought my new starter aftermarket from amazon for around $60. Cranks up as if it was a new car. Still works great 2 years after.

I'd stay away from autozone parts. Look for parts on amazon or ebay, the reviews are almost always spot on and usually free returns/exchange.

Quick update

So a few days in and it took 4 mins to start the car. When my Husband took it to AZ and let the guy hear it he initially said "oh that's the flywheel". LOL on what planet does the flywheel start turning before the starter engages? Anyway he soon realized he want talking to dummies and quickly exchanged the part. So far so good but new starter week be ordered next week. I'll probably put the AZ starter on ice.
