Hanging wire next to transmission pan?

Hey guys I'm dropping my transmission pan to inspect today and I was starting to unbolt the 21 bolts and noticed a mysterious wire hanging on the driver's side of the transmission pan. It appears to be damaged at the connector but I have no idea what it's supposed to be connected to and I'm having a hard time getting a view of where it comes from. Here's a pic:

Anyone know?

Are you having any issues with the car?

If it were brown, I would say "previous owner replaced/eliminated the rear e-mount", but it's a black connector. So, it must be one of the sensors. As the car is running fine it's hard to guess.

That is FOR SURE the ground to the transmission. The other end of the connector should go to the rail about 8" forward of the mount.

Well I've been having intermittent slipping transmission issues, and occasionally the RPM's will kick up out of nowhere during slow/normal acceleration and it won't shift out of first gear. Might even be dropping a gear now that I think about it... I did the old drain and fill/cleaned the magnets today haven't driven it much yet though to see if the issue is resolved. The old fluid was brown and very dirty though, but no metal shavings in the pan just some gunk on the magnets as was expected.

What happens if it is disconnected? Sorry I'm clueless when it comes to electrical stuff. The connector itself looks to have a piece of metal (possibly the rail itself) sheared off inside of it so I don't think I can reconnect it... I can try to get a better pic tomorrow of the connector and rail itself.

The transmission should technically be grounded. Which is why they sell grounding kits. I would suggest taking the wire and snipping the end of it off and connecting a ring terminal and just bolt it to the transmission.

if you get the grounds and wiring fixed and it still does it, then look at a trans go shift kit.

Just bumping this thread to say grounding the wire worked! Transmission is smooth as butter again. Thanks guys!

Figured. I would suggest getting a grounding kit by either making one yourself or purchasing it pre made. Pretty easily done yourself though tbh. Good luck and happy driving.

Stillen, Member on here Shinjudo, Ebay. It is extremely easy to do yourself though, but if you want a premade kit then they are your best options.
Also depends if you have an aftermarket radio installed. IF you do then I would take it out, reconnect the antenna adapter IF you're using one and wrap it in electrical tape to stop the interference. You could also try moving it to a different spot than where it is. First suggestion works pretty well though.

The adapter is for if you have an aftermarket radio. It allows you to connect the antenna to the aaftermarket radio. No worries if you dont have one. If you are getting distortion while using the rear defrost it could be a ground at the rear of the car as the antenna and defrost use the same ground which SHOULD be if i remember correctly either drivers side C pillar or passenger side C pillar. I really cant remember but youd have to pull of the plastic trim peices to find out.

ok I recently found that same wire disconnected on my car. The connector is damaged on the end so im gonna try the method that was suggested a few posts up and snip the wire. What happens if you leave the wire disconected?

I have a 2000 Silverado and all the gears work great except for when I put it in reverse it does not engage and it is not throwing a engine warning sign or any other sign I hooked up code reader on the bottom of steering wheel and it comes back only as sensor or Cadillac converter that's the only signs that it says I did a transmission fluid flush and still I have no reverse what could be the problem

Why would you join a Nissan Maxima forum to ask a question about a Chevy Silverado? There are plenty of Chevy forums out there.
