I am having an issue with my ABS brakes on my 2000 maxima. They have worked before but now they aren't activating as well as they use too, so I am wondering if the sensor needs cleaning? Or is this another problem?

When was the last time you had the brakes done, or the lines bled to the brake calipers. Air in the lines can cause squishy brakes ish feeling and i wouldnt doubt the air would mess with abs, it uses brake fuild to operate

 

I don't know when the brakes were last replaced, but I do know I got the brake fluid flushed a month or two ago.

 

How are you testing the system?

 

Slamming the brakes trying to engage the ABS. Is there another way?

 

If the wheels aren't locking up solid, then ABS is working and/or you can't break traction.

You're going to have to be specific of the symptoms.
If the pedal isn't soft and brake performance is good, then there's nothing wrong.

Are you testing in the wet?

 

Ok, thanks for letting me know, my wheels haven't been locking up, so I guess I don't actually have any problems.

 

Probably not. You'll feel a distinct thumping through the pedal when the ABS kicks in. Generally it either works or it doesn't. If it's not working you'll get an ABS light.

The conditions you test it in will play a role too. Even trying it on a cool morning vs. a hot afternoon will affect the traction on same road.

Perhaps whom ever flushed the system didn't bleed the calipers in the correct order. I forgot to do the caliper order correctly and my brakes were squishy and my ABS/TCS was on all the time on a previous vehicle I owned. Brakes still worked and it was winter so I dealt with the lights.
