2000 Maxima headlight issue
2000 Maxima headlight issue
So I've been having this issue with my headlights and wanted to get some input on what it may be. It's happened twice...
While I'm riding at night with my lowbeams on, they seem to be at normal brightness, so that's the good part. Highbeams are normal brightness as well. However, when I switch my high beams on, all of my lights flicker. If it's a flash of the highbeams, my dash lights, and taillights flicker. Well, idk if flicker would be a good way to describe it. It's like a off/on delay. It only happens in while I'm in drive. Also, when I parked my car, turned it off, I turned my headlights off of the auto setting. When I turned them back on to the auto setting, they were very dim and I heard a noise under the hood (a buzzing sound) then the buzzing stopped and they returned to full brightness.
I have videos if that would help anyone. I'll upload them a bit later. What do you think the issue is??? It's kind of nerve wrecking...
Thanks in advance.

The lights flickering when you turn on the high beams sounds like a worn out light switch. But that part about buzzing under the hood, I have no idea.
A video of a sound isn't really going to be of much help. What you need to do is track down the buzzing sound and find the spot it is coming from.

As Dennis said, your best bet is to track down where the buzz is coming from, and go from there.
Be aware that the control of your headlamps comes from three sources: a) The light/combination switch, b) The Headlight battery saver subsystem, and c) The Smart entrance control unit. There are multiple relays and switches involved. My gut feeling is that one of the relays is sick (not yet completely bad). This makes the control system enter transient race conditions; these may or may not clear (e.g. when the buzzing stops).
The Headlamp subsystem is described on pages EL-34 to EL-40 of the FSM. Download the FSM from here: http://boredmder.com/FSMs/Nissan/Maxima/.
Then, check the key voltages, fuses, and try to identify the relay or switch that's buzzing.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
