I have a 2000 nissan maxima it accelrates really poorly from 40-100 its sluggish and it sounds really horrible like its surging thats the best way i can explain it , i do have a CEL for a massive evap leak idk if that could be the problem , the car sounds horrible when accerlating and i really need help pin pointing the possible soolutions to this problem

The evap solenoid/vent valve could be stuck open or broken.

what do you mean by it sounds horrible? Ticking, Exaust noise, marbles in a can noise, knocking?

the noise is coming from the engine , when you accelerate it’s sounds like it’s clogged up or struggling to pick up speed but it’s not struggling to pick up speed it just sounds horrible

Check codes to make sure knock sensor isn't on there.

Replace Y pipe with aftermarket (no cats). If it's high miles (and I'm sure it wasn't maintained), then precats are probably clogged. Gut the rear cat, too.

If it seems fine at low rpms, then hits a wall at high rpm, then that's pretty much a guarantee. I don't think maf would cause what you're describing, since you said it sounds bad.
