2001 Maxima thermostat

I have a question. I took my 2001 Maxima to the shop and they said the thermostat needs to be replaced but that I have two thermostats on my car?? Is this true? I only know of the one right above the alternator. I was going to replace it myself but if there is a second thermostat, I have no idea how to replace it. They were going to charge me $260. But I have $100 credit with them so the total comes to $160. Am I getting ripped off? Thanks guys.

Your max only has one thermostat and yes, you're getting ripped off. Easy job, do it yourself and save the $$.

you are incorrect it does have two thermostats on the 2001 one is right above the alternator the second one is on the rear of the engine where you see a pipe and it has a housing called the water valve same as a thermostat I have replaced both of them on mine it easy job if you can work on the car

Two thermostats replaced and parts and new coolant that they prob would put in...$260 about right. They prob will drain rad and put in fresh....adds cost.

But as others say....its easy.

So I did not know there were two thermostats but after checking the FSM under the Engine Lubrication and Cooling section or LC tab it shows a second thermostat called a Water Control Valve. What is the purpose of a second thermostat?

And so it regulates water flow based on temperature just like a thermostat? What is its exact purpose? Please explain.

Yeah I can replace the upper thermostat, but I have no idea how to replace the 2nd (water control valve) I'll probably just have them do it so I can move on with my life lol Thanks for all of your input!

Nissan designed the same setup to be used in the 3.5 (.One time where the 3.0 dek was ahead) for better cooling.

Many 350z guys found this out and bought the 3.0 dek setup. If you look in the V on the 3.5 by the knock sensor you will see a square with 4 threaded holes ,this is where it is suppose to be.
Was big on my350z.com

Heres a picture of one

That 2nd thermostat was an experiment that obviously didn't prove its worth and cost. It was only on the 2000 and 2001 and disappeared
