Inner tie rod tool

I've been replacing front end parts and while looking here for tips etc I came across a thread about inner tie rod replacement and the beast tool for the job. I can't find that thread now but some of you may remember it. Some said Autozone w/ their tool that you also have to rent accessories for. It looked like crap. Some said buy the tool at at Harbor Freight or regret it when you tried the AZ tool. I bought the HF tool but I picked up the inner tie rods at Advance Auto and asked to see their loaner tool. I got it to try before I opened he HF tool. It works great. The 33.6mm U piece fits a little loose but not loose enough to slip. Anyway for future reference the tool is Powerbuilt Kit #85. Also Home Depot has some stainless steel zip tie looking things that work great on the boot.

You don't need a removal tool. You just beat the clips up with a chisel and unscrew it. The tools are a waste of time.

If you're really tough on inner tie rods I suppose Honestly I'd just get the loaner from Advance. You pay a deposit for the tool. Use it. Return it and get your money back. If you buy one try to find one w/ a 33.6mm jaw. I'm guessing the size of the ITR flats is closer to 33mm but the 33.6 will work w/o slipping.

I thought the tool made it easier. Give me a choice between a ratchet/breaker bar and a wrench and I'll take the ratchet every time.

True but when you return the tool you get every cent back. If you buy one get the one w/ 33.6mm. I suppose you'll be the go to guy when any buddies are doing inner tie rods. I plan to never need this tool ever again

I JUST used a similar tool on my Grand Caravan yesterday. It made the job super easy. Well worth it. On that vehicle there's no room for any sort of a wrench to get in there.

That being said, It's not a tool I would bother owning. I own a lot of tools too. It can be had on loan pretty easy and there's little chance of needing it a pinch.

I think i got my tool from china freight, used it the one time and never again, now it just sits and takes up space while collecting dust. Really is something you are better off renting like derrick said, its such a niche tool and its not like inner tie rods are something that you have to change all the time. I hated doing the inners anyways, my hands simply dont fit where they need to and getting the damn rubber boot on was a nightmare. Hell I think if theres a next time i might even just pay a shop to do it, thats how much of a PITA i remember it being.
