2003 Automatic Transmission Replacement with 2004 Trans?

I am needing to replace my auto. transmission in my 2003 Maxima soon. Is the 2002-2003 Maxima transmission the only one I can use or will a newer Maxima such as the 2004 or an i35 work? Thanks for any information!

I think all three should be compatible since they're all the same model, RE4F04B.

I have heard from some people that the 2004 Maxima offered a 4-speed and a 5-speed auto. but there is nothing I can find to support that. Thanks for the reply!

It's true. I didn't advert to that in my earlier post because I thought you were fully cognizant of that fact. The 4-speed auto was offered in the 6th Gen only in the 2004 SL.
It seems, however, that the I35 transmission is a better option as it's exactly the same with the 2003 Maxima. The model code for both is 88X04, while that of the 2004 Maxima is 89X00.

Thanks for answering all of my questions!

Do you know the difference between the 03 and 04 4-speed trans. model code?

I ended up getting a transmission from a 2002 i35. It works great.

Thanks again!
