Aftermarket radio

Aftermarket radio
Hi, I'm looking to buy an aftermarket radio for my 2002 Maxima Gle with the Bose sound system. I'm unsure if I want a single or double din. Are there any recommendations or things to look out for when buying one? I don't want to mess up the Bose system if I don't have to.
TIA! 😊

It needs to be 1-ohm capable if you dont want to rewire the existing bose system. Most headunits are 4ohm - if you try to hook one of those up, it will burn out the amp in your headunit. Really is a massive PITA, im sure it was decent for its time but its nothing but a headache now.

Wow... Ok. So what is your suggestion? Do they make 1 ohm head units?

Only bose makes 1 ohm head units. What you do is buy something like the PAC ROEM NIS2 line level adaptor. The speaker output of the head unit goes to the PAC ROEM unit and the PAC ROEM unit plugs into the Maxima's wire harness.
Other things you will need is a faceplate adaptor and an antenna adaptor.

Awesome. Thank you. Is this something I can do myself? Is there a wiring diagram available with step by step instructions anywhere? Also, does this work for double din? I'm new to all of this, but totally willing to learn.
Edit: I guess the wiring diagram depends on the radio I buy, doesn't it? Besides that, does everything else simply plug in?

It makes no difference if you are installing a single din or a double din head unit. You just need the appropriate faceplate adaptor.
There is no wiring instructions specifically for the Maxima. The radio will have a list of what wire has what signal. The PAC ROEM unit has a list of what wire is for what signal. You should be able to figure it out. The only thing is that you should solder the wires together, not twist them together.
If you look at the photo I posted, in the left lower corner is the connector that plugs into the back of the head unit. Follow it up maybe 3/4 of the way up and you will see a bundle of blue pieces. Those blue pieces are insulation covering the splices of the head unit wires to the PAC ROEM unit.
Can you do it? I don't know.
If your IQ is 80 or less - NO.
If your IQ is 90 - maybe, but it will be rather difficult.
If your IQ is 100 or above - YES.
You could also go to the Audio and Electronics forum that is part of Maxima.org and find the answers to your questions.

Thanks for the help 😊 I went to Crutchfield thinking that I could order everything from them, and the "audio specialist" told me that the pac roem nis2 would not work for my car. He sent me a list of "all that I would need". I'll upload the screenshots of what he sent me. (Should I move to the audio section of the forum, and start my post over in there?)

I was wondering if I was missing something. All you need is wiring adapter that allows the the aftermarket HU to send a signal to the Bose amp and the Bose powers the speakers the HU's ohm don't matter (really). Your just sending a high level signal to an amp.
What Crutchfield told you is correct.

follow crutchfield, they will help you tremendously, and if you do ti yourself they are a phonecall away, i got into a snag in the middle of the install and they helped me resolve it literally with the unit in my hand over the phone.

I had a Bose in my 98, it died. I swapped in a new head unit with a converter. For whatever reason I took the converter out and wired the Bose amps to the pre outs. Worked perfectly and I swear it sounded better.
The other option is to replace the speakers too and get rid of the Bose amp(s) as well. I know it's a bit more involved on a 5th gen with the stock sub.

if the subwoofer is functioning prior to the new head unit, it will work.....
they don't mention it because we have a very werid stock set up but if you use the convertor to use the factory speakers the sub will work. crutch field is very helpful and you can ask them any further questions.
you said new speakers.... so if that's true you will need to look into that and how the sub is hooked up because new speakers you will have to rewire everything including the sub. again you can def ask crutchfield.

If you're getting new speakers for the doors you will have to worry about the ohm rating mentioned above. No matter what you do, if you keep the bose amp the sub will work. It runs on it's own circuit.
If you buy 4ohm speakers (most car speakers are) the amp will be putting out 1/4 of it's potential power.
