Compressor runs with heater regardless of HVAC control settings

Title says it all. Browsed through the HA section but couldn't find where it indicated that the (dehumidification) function would be active with all damper settings and fan speeds regardless of whether or not the AC and/or recirc buttons were depressed and lit (ON).

Am I missing something here or do I need to junk my HVAC console control module and pull another one out of a yard car? When I want pure heat, I don't want the compressor running.

Edit: I'm manual controls, not auto

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to turn on when you have it set on windshield

Agreed. My 2002 has a slight notch in the temp control once it's gets pretty far to the cold side - then the compressor comes on. The two settings with the windshield icon both dehumidify.
I'm always driving around with the A/C on when I didn't want it.

Defrost dehumidification is understandable. But when I'm on full blast heat and dash + floor vents, or anything inbetween other than defrost, I don't need a compressor. I don't think this is normal operation. I'll dig deeper into the FSM. If I can't figure out what normal operation is I'll just throw a switch inline with the 12V lead to the compressor. I'm cool with excuses to put more flashy lighted switches in the console.

Also, section 4 of the Owner's Manual for heater and AC do not indicate compressor as always on.

Mine is definitely not always on. Did you check the ac trigger wire at the compressor?

Manual controls doesn't have that, but it does have AC button, which should be lit if it's the computer controlling it, and you should be able to turn it off.

I bet his relay is stuck.

I ran through all settings this afternoon and verified function. Today the system appeared to function properly and in line with the Owner's Manual, which states compressor ON with both defrost buttons, compressor OFF with max heat and either of the first three (from left to right) damper settings (dash vent, dash/floor, floor), all with AC and recirc buttons in the OFF position.

So all is good so far and I will keep an eye on it. Thanks, child, for the relay hint. I hadn't even considered that... I think this was maybe just my lack of familiarity with this system as I have yet to run the heater since the swap, only AC. It is most certainly within the realm of possibility that I just didn't know how the hell the system was supposed to run in the first place
