Takata recalls -- Disconnect module, never go off?
Takata recalls -- Disconnect module, never go off?
Hi, I currently have my 2001 Maxima in a million pieces, interior completely gutted, no carpeting, no side panels, nada, so everything is really easy to get to. I have direct easy access to the SRS control module right now, if I unplug all the cables with the battery disconnected, are the airbags guaranteed to never go off after that point?
There is another Takata airbag recall today and I do not trust Takata anymore. I have yet to bring my Maxima in for the recall, but I'm afraid that the replacement airbags are going to be just as bad, my fears just hasn't been confirmed yet. I believe it is a matter of time for a news story on replacement airbags also having problems. I've never been involved in an accident and I've been driving for almost 10 years now, if I want to take the chance and simply trust my flawless driving record, how can I make sure my airbags never deploy, and for the mechanism to never get triggered under any circumstance?
Thank you!

Congrats on your flawless record. I started driving at 16 and made it 20 years without being in an accident, then a little over a year ago some dolt 19yo on her cell phone decided to rear-end me while doing 60mph and destroy 3 vehicles and my neck in the process. No skid marks, no warning, just destruction. I was lucky to walk away from that one, albeit with pain for the rest of my life. I think you get the point.
If you're worried about a spontaneous or accidental deployment and don't want to take it in, just unplug them. I have received about four Nissan Factory Takata recall notices in the last year. I'm not worried about it. Statistically, I'll get rear-ended before an airbag blows. Oh, wait...
My driver side is plugged in and I don't have a pass side bag even in the dash because I was too lazy to put it back in after pulling my evap coil. I'll put it back someday.

User1, I'm sorry that happened to you. With an accident like that, I don't think an airbag isn't going to help you very much which is why I don't want them. If I'm going to die, it's probably because something terrible enough happened that an airbag wasn't going to do anything anyway.
You're absolutely positive the airbags won't go off if the SRS module is disconnected? I heard cases about airbags deploying when people drop them on the ground from carrying them, obviously at that point disconnected from the car. Perhaps the 2001 Maxima aribags aren't as smart (fortunately.)
You said you had four recall notices? Were these from the same recall or your replacement airbags being recalled, after you already brought your car in? If it's the latter, then these recalls are even worse than I thought. I really appreciate it, I don't want a metal shard stuck in my arm because someone love tapped me at a drive thru.

The only thing about which I'm positive, is that I am not positive about anything.
I kept a few of the notices. I don't know where they are. I threw a couple away. I'm just not worried about it. The plugs are bright yellow and easy to get to if you want to DC them. I have way more important things to worry about than bad airbags.

16 people killed by defects, but 28,000 souls saved, out of the total deployment. If cars are not parts of recalls, just assume it is good. AD life insurance will give you peace of minds. If investigator determined the airbag were actually cause end of life, your relatives/next of kins would have chance to get compensation. Though out of your choice of who will get how much, thinking they are compensated will hopefully make you smile (in heaven). I'll take the chance, believing every one has own number.
This makes me wonder, did 4th gens have a different manufacturer of airbags? Or did Takata make them properly back then, or are there just a small enough 4th gens on the road that there hasn't been enough statistical failures to mandate a recall?
