Random no start, just clicks

The 03 has a random no start. It just clicks. Then boom starts right up. Alt is new last year. Battery fully charged. Before I replace the starter I wanted to try the INHIBIT relay. Well.. no one has the relay I need. Parts stores, online swear I need the large brown one. Check this out. It's small, blue. My year 03 doesn't even show that fuse. Only relay close to that is a blower motor relay in the 05-06. Any ideas what's going on? Not sure what part number I need

Try your local Nissan dealer.

Or... Put a dvom on the signal wire at the starter. If you're still getting 12ish v. With a click/no start... You have a bad starter.

Your car has an intermittent problem - contact or switch that's going bad/loose, but has not failed ""hard" yet.
If your car is an AT, check the following:
  • Your PNP switch and the associated wiring (wiggle it, make sure no broken wires),
  • Check that your Inhibitor relay is properly seated, contacts are good,
  • Make sure fuse #20 in in the Fuse Block (lower dash panel, by your left hand) is properly seated.
If your car has M/T, check the following:
  • Clutch interlock switch,
  • Check that your Inhibitor rely is properly seated, contacts are good,
  • Make sure fuse #21 in in the same Fuse Block is properly seated.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Other possibilities are your ignition switch or maybe that one (or both) of the battery cables have corrosion where the wire goes into the terminal.

The inhibit relay is a small blue relay. There are a few of these relays used in the car. Over by the power steering reservoir is another relay bank where you will find more of these blue relays. Swap the inhibit relay with one of them, such as the horn relay that won't matter if you put a bad relay in that spot. I doubt that your problem is a relay problem, though.

thanks for the idea. I swapped inhibit with horn 3. Not the problem. I got a starter yesterday is a backup. Assuming it's under the intake. Going to take that off now see what happens
